Vista 64 associations help

Need Urgent Help

I had installed IconPackager but soon removed it due to several issues that occured on my computer.

On the set default programs menu (control panel > Programs > default programs > set default programs) when I try to click some of the programs to change the file types associated by it, an error message pops up:

"Program Defaults Control Panel Error

There was a problem loading the "Set a Default Program" page. (Error Code 80070483)"

The affected programs are: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Windows Mail, and Microsoft Outlook - which happens to be the programs that vista allows you to put on the start menu by default, right above the recently used programs list.

When I go to Taskbar Properties and set Firefox and Outlook to be the default programs for E-Mail and Internet, instead of the icon and 2 lines of text it only shows a blank piece of paper icon. When I click on it, it displays the following error message:

"The item you selected is unavaliable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?"

The last problem I've been experiencing is that some of my icons have changed. I have discovered 2 so far: Removable drives (USB) has an icon of a cassette tape. Word 97-2003 files have the same blank sheet of paper sign as the shortcuts in my start menu.

I am using Vista Home Premium 64bit with SP1.

If anybody can share some information regarding this issue or suggest a fix of some sort, it would be much appreciated.

Do you have the system restore turned on? If you do go back till the problem is corrected and then check which application it is that is no longer there. It has to be an application you installed that wrote a bad VBS script file and has changed regs for the system values to be ignored or lost. Usually this is due to a bad character such as space in the wrong order or such in the script not associated properly with a 64 bit driver! or that is it is not a 64 bit driver at all... but a 32 bit driver!

64 Bit Systems are very touchy with VBS and drivers designed by the VBS scripts used to control objects in the system.

Try to find it by going back and seeing where it is at and what you added to the system to do this.

Also if you have MS Office 2003 installed on that system - it very well could be the root of the error completely. Vista 64 bit and Office 2003 do not work very well together  for sure on Vista Home premium. Vista Ultimate it can be worked around. But still have problems with 64 bit systems.

Try using Office 2007 and that should make things abit easier with the system you have.
