Sins would make a perfect MMORTS.

I've always wanted a MMORTS with millions of units on a huge map, but I just don't think it's resonable with current connection speeds.

Sins could work however, thanks the to modular nature of the maps.  Each star could be handled by it's own server and you would connect to another server by star jumping to it.  Sometimes you may not be able to get into a server, and the star jump would fail, perhaps the ships charge the jump for a few seconds but then just never leave.  You could come up with some silly physics theory to explain this in-game.

You could give ships to new players, for example, put up a handful of ships for a incoming player to adopt and use as his own, he would thus be your allie, atleast until he was large enough to oppose you.

I haven't thought of all the details, but I think it's a cool idea if Stardock and Ironclad are ever looking for a really ambitious project...

There used to be a lot of discussion way back in beta and close to release about creating a persistant universe for Sins. Sort of a pseudo-MMO in a sense. You could play MP matches and wins/losses would decide which race was winning/expanding or getting conquered, and you'd have this galaxy map to keep track of for progress..

It's a great idea, but it's likely way out of scope!

Why?

The old game FreeSpace 2 had something that was pretty much just that - a persistent galaxy with win/loss records that affected area control of the map, wasn't it called Squad-Wars or something? If they could do it in what... '98'? '99'? They could certainly do it now. I for one would enjoy it... The only problem would be flavor of the month imba winning out.

I would not want sins to go MMO, unless it was free.

Besides the limitations involved there is one issue,

People are dicks.

If you go MMO you get all the problems that come with MMOs. And not just cheating, account theft, online spamming and server maintenance and repair ect, ect.

You also need to find people willing to run a campaign long enough to hold attention of those playing. Or mission based gameplay, and if you do that. What do you reward to the players? How do you reward it? How do you keep vetran players from camping the new ones? How do you keep a constant
