Here's how I see it...

Here's how I see it...

IMO

In reading a recent thread I felt the need to say a couple of things..Personally, I would like to say I agree with IR, I don't think the threads title reflected the exact motive of its contents and I would have posted but could not...so with that said..

As far as tips go, there isn't some book of hidden tips and tricks we keep to ourselves, as problems arise when skinning I try to attack them with vigor, with stubborness, hard work and amibition, part of skinning IS figuring these things out, SKinning is like anything else in life, the harder you work, the more pride you take, the less apt you are to ask for help... the better your chances of success are. Ive been skinning a LONG time and can , with pride and honestly say 98% of it I learned by myself.. through trial and error, long hours, lots of coffee and cigarettes and hundreds of sleepless nights.

I highly doubt Davinci became a Master at his trade by giving up and asking for help everytime he came across what he deemed an insurmountable road block. Know this.. If you try something enough times.. it will work.. If you have the tenacity to keep at it until it's figured out no matter what.. then your well on your way to becoming a master of whatever your heart desires.

I firmly believe that one should not even ask for help until one has thouroughly exhausted body and mind in defiance of a problem, then and only then, when you have tried your best.. explorered EVERY avenue, at your wits end, then.. put your pride aside.. no matter how much it hurts.. and finally buckle.

The sense that people should be entitled to help, to less than glowing praise of their work..to me.. is unacceptable, It seems to me a very liberal philosophy and one that again.. to me.. holds no water. Now obviously.. I have zero problems helping people further their skinning knowledge, I love to help, I imagine that over the last year or so or more, other than maybe Cavan1 that Myself, IR and NT have contributed to 95% of the WB skinning help that has been given on this site so again.. I am not oppsed to helping but I do, in no way, feel obligated to hand out help or critique more mildly ot untruly because of my status on this site.

I see no need for a special Channel, or thread, or round table to be instigated.. when help is asked for.. almost 100% of the time.. it is given..and usually by myself, NT or IR. I would like to think that this in some small part is appreciated but judging by a few comments in the other thread, sometimes I wonder if it's worth it.

To speak to what ignited the post I refer to I shall only say this.... NT said under no uncertain terms exactly what many amongst us were thinking.. was it harsh?.. yes.. but sometimes a blunt sword is better than a speeding bullet. I do not disagree with the main point he made, I completely agree with him. Could he have said it in a more compassionate manner? Sure, he could have, however, this wasn't the first time this had been brought to the attention of the skinner, I myself, had a couple of times mentioned almost exactly the same thing and I wasn't the only one. Point being, nicety was not working. If Craig had not said what was said.. someone else was going to.

For me the main reason was this.. Its VERY hard to see someone skipping all the work, breaking all the cardinal rules and then bumping those offending skins constantly to the top of page one, knocking down work that some folks spend months on. Straight and simple. If it wrong to think that is wrong. Then 7 out of 7 so called community elders, Masters, Mods alike.. were also wrong. If someone can explain to me why it might have been acceptable then please feel free.

I support stronger critique, less tolerance of the above tactics and a more open dialog when it comes to these things, I think WC may be a better place because of it.

Hard work makes a great skinner\ person. Work hard, don't give up, get it done... be proud.

The SKS6 guide is complete and is just going through some format changes, and should hopefully be released in the next few weeks.

That's great news ID, and again I'm all for helping when and if I can, the root of my post was merely to say expect to work hard and reap the rewards of doing so.

That wouldn't happen to be in a downloadable/printable form would it? That would be cool! One of the reasons I haven't even attempted a WB skin yet is one...because of my health...its hard enough sitting here for hours doing docks and trying to figure some stuff out...and I can't even begin to imagine the stuff you seasoned WB skinners go through. Second because I haven't a clue where to even start without at least some form of tutorial. Docks were easy to figure out on my own...but WB's is a whole other realm.

Its the same figuring out, just more of it. :) I am always here for you Steve. I think I at least owe you a couple of hours. Make sure you bring an apple...

You are a Master in my book if you can skin the vista navigational arrows properly.

It goes something like this... Do they HAVE to be differently sized in IE7 than Windows Explorer? Does the stupid little arrow have to stretch in one instance and not in another? hmmmm. the background image doesn't seem to match the recommended image size. Lemme try this.... nope...lemme try this...nope..lemme try this... that's better, will it work.....fart! Well maybe if I...nope.... OH this will definately work.... getting there.... to be continued....... ;p

The Explorer and IE backgrounds are two different sizes\images. However when using LARGE icons in IE7 the large arrows\background uses the small sized arrows\background and stretches them very badly to make the large arrows\bg.

For now.. best solution - recommend people use small icons in IE7 or the Large sized back forward arrows and background will look awkward.

Long term solution, Neil, add skinning of large icons\background as seperate images in IE7.

I know exactly how you feel NT. That's where I cheat and make the background part of the arrows.
There's a tip for ya. :)
It took me almost a week to figure out that the "IE Tabs Corners and Bottom" were actually transparent bitmaps. Now they look and work fine....

As far as the skinning goes, in all the years uploading skins, I almost "never" get any constructive feedback. It's always the same old...looks good or I don't like it. It's hard to grow as an artist like that. You have to basically teach yourself, which is what I've done.

I've helped a lot of people and even took some under my wing. It's all hit and miss from there...:)

Good read V.

I really appreciate that Craig...really I do...but I wouldn't be so cruel as to impose on you like that. Creating the docks for everyone's skins keeps me busy. But if I ever get the energy to give it a realistic shot at creating a WB I'll keep that in mind. I have ideas for some but its more a matter of health problems right now than anything else for me to even consider it for now.

And you don't owe me a thing Craig! If it weren't for the hard work you guys put into skinning I'd have nothing to do but sit here and play with a $2000 deck of cards. I'm just glad to have the opportunity to add something to all the hard work you guys do! If I had an extra set of hands I'd be doing a lot more. I actually feel bad that I can't make all the docks I want to. But hey....life goes on.

Sounds almost like your making docks.

If I can one day get you & V in the same room...I'll bring a bushel of apples....a case of shooters and smokes. ;)

Here's a random thought...
Have you ever seen a CBT Nugget course? Very very nice format for learning something. Perhaps a collaboration between Stardock and some Masters could produce such a curriculum and offer it for sale for those that are interested in advancing their skills. All sides win with something like that.

Not sure about the Nugget part but I create training CBT's for the company I work for. I love doing those things.

You know, 'students of Architecture' up until the early 20th century still studied under the apprenticeship system...taken 'under wing' by an existing Master of the trade...and when I went through in '72 you were still required to work employed by another Architect for 12 months PRIOR to ultimately qualifying.

It is NEVER all/only about 'work it out for yourself - trial-and-error'....there's plenty of room for third party assistance, Q and A, etc.

[again with the old anecdotes...but...] I remember the time a chap called Neil asked a skinner 'how the heck did you get WB to do that?' [or words to that effect].

EVERYONE can learn from others.....

EVERYONE ....;)

My turn...I don't even pretend to be in the same realm as you masters, not for a minute. And I am not going to agree or disagree with any of this thread. I do wish to say this: I used to ask Fairyy~ for use of her widgets, and was granted use, but was nicely urged to make my own. She used to talk to me about margins and stuff. I still don't know a lot about margins, but thanks to Karen's urging, I started making my own. I went around and around with I.R. to get permission to make a Knot Vista DX theme. He worked me hard until I met his approval. I thought " Man, this guy is picky! " But he helped me to become a little better at what I do by making me learn. RomanDA could easily write any script I might need, but instead, he helped me a little, pointed me in the right direction, and then I had to do something for myself. I could go on. My point is that I personally have been helped by several masters, and others, and I owe them for where I am now. And believe me, I have a long way to go.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank those who have helped me, and you know who you are, and I hope someday to be able to help someone. I may never be a master, but I would like to do a master's work. (I stole that from someone on this site, but it is how I feel.)

yes 2 of 3, for sale. An advanced course which is above and beyond a normal manual. ;)
Such an endeavor would be quite time consuming and those that created it should be entitled to compensation. You don't get free advanced courses in other applications for free do you?

John, I know you help others, you have helped me on several occasions.  I agree people need to work hard, but I also would like to see more community involvement has a whole.

As far I know, it's going to be released in several different formats.  Not all at once, but we plan to make this easily accessible.
