The clicky thing on planets

*sorry was supposed to be a quick question, it got long, ignore the second part if you like*

Newbo question, but one that bugs the hell out of me every game.

Sometimes on a planet screen I can merrily repeatedly click 'build' and the same building will be laid down. The game will helpfully select the next tile and keep the same building selected so I can lay down about 10 of the same building in about a 2 seconds.

Sometimes it decides to de-select the building after every time I hit build. Which annoyingly means I have to keep selecting the building again and hit build then reselect the building.

I can't figure out why it works quite randomly one way or another. Whats worse is I'm fairly sure its an amazingly simple answer, which is why I've never asked until now.

P.S

The reason I like it is because of my planet setup. Which while I'm on this maybe I should quickly set out encase I'm doing something wrong here.

I usually play Crippling and win most of the time so will be looking to go to Macho soon.
I normally play Neutral/Good, Huge map with uncommon stars, abundant everything else. Although I do mix that up now and again.

I have 6 types of planet.
My HW is a bit of everything, as thats all I have to begin with.
The core worlds, normally right by my HW are full of trade goods and wonders.
I have maybe 2/3 builders, because of nice bonus tiles which are all manufacturing.
The occasional planet is pure research if it has nice bonus tiles.
All the rest are 1 factory, 1 moral, 1 farm, 2/3 Research, the entire rest is Income, these make up about 90% of planets.

I set my sliders to 20%,20%,60% and every planet gets focus, depending on type. All, planets stay social focused until built. In the early mid game I'll pile into researching up income, factories and research (in that order) then put every planet on social focus until all are fully developed.

What I do is colonize as much as possible from the start. Normally building one 1 trade center on each to avoid bankruptcy until population is enough to break even. So I end up with a good number of colonise. Pay the other races to go to war alot so that anyone who is hostile towards me is too busy to fight me.

I avoid building any fleet until I have at least harpoons, and then I focus on getting total majesty. The reason being I can have a spin control center and avoid having much of a fleet at all. This saving allows me to develop my planets better.

The problem is all my games are looking the same, I either get attacked early in the game and loose crushingly. Or I survive the first two years and then the rest is a forgone conclusion. I'm getting much better at managing the other races to avoid them attacking me early so win almost all games now.

So now that most games result in a win after I have finished turtling, and finally attack with a fullish tech tree. Normally by the time I am on my last 2/3 races the tech tree is actually finished and I turn all my research buildings into income buildings and I can just buy my friends through influence starbases.

Im thinking maybe games should not have to last until techs are complete, and second if these tactics will fly on the next level up?

Well, concerning the clicky-thing ... I experienced that too, and I think this happens when you have an unimproved but improvable tile (terraforming). After placing a building, the cursor jumps to that tile and all you can select is the upgrade-tile option.
To solve that: Immediately queue up the upgrade, then everything works as normal. Do not forget to put that upgrade thing back in the queue, though.

On your second question: Being a male, I am not very interested in you going "Macho", but there might be girls around who like a hairy breast, so go on. Once you are done with the difficulty level, you could advance to "Maso". (Wether your strategies will work there, I do not know, because I never play above "Tough".)

You could set the research speed for the game at the slowest level. Then you can finish a game way before all techs are researched.

I actually play on slow anyway. The general strategy is to secure a tech lead and then use it to win. I secure a tech lead by saving money everywhere that I can plough into research. I like to be cautious, and only fight one civ at once, and then only when I'm certain I will win.

Does the AI fleet their Transports with warships? If no, then you can build ships with lots of engines, sensors and 1 weapon just to kill Transports.

Welcome to the club. Once a player discovers the path that makes him through the game, he needs to change something for keeping the game interesting. The usual solution is increasing the difficulty level. But the AI will not be different at maso, it will just have twice its usual output. Since you already learned basic game tricks, coping with that shouldn't be a problem to you.

There's also another way to make game more interesting: you need to roleplay, or set you some unusual goal before you start the game, like:
- all good AIs must survive and be allied,
- no diplomacy at all, but request for peace,
- try to make one minor a mayor civ,
- ... (no idea, someone will surely add his own bunch of them).

Double click the buildings it put's them down for you so you don't have to keep clicking build.

I do this as well, because I like playing on tough even though it's not.

How about:
1. Finish a game as fast a you can, or under a certain amount of time so you can't research the whole techtree and then crush everybody.
2. Don't lose any ships

Nowadays I have the tendency to play games faster but less efficient. I usually play gigantic games with modest values for everything and very slow research. I noticed that I don't need to optimize planets to win on though so when I conquer planets I improve them a little bit and move on quickly in real and game time. So lots of planets still have their starports by the end of the game for instance. I use all available tiles on planets but the planets are sometimes only partly specialized and the buildings aren't always top of the tech-tree when I have won. It took some time before I could give up the 'completist' attitude but now my games are a little bit more fun for me (I also like to spend time on other game elements like ship designing and modding).

Hello there...

"The problem is all my games are looking the same,"

You play huge map with abundant habitable planets - try a medium map with uncommmon habitable planets. You will find it VERY different and you will have to change your strategy to do well.

Cheers!

Before you start a game you can select your victory conditions, if you always win by conquest for example, turn it off and see what happens.

That clicky-thing happens to me too. I don't know why so i just deal with it and reselect the structure i want to build.

I am very confused by this statement.... I'm reading it as:

"try to make one minor a major civ"

???????

Please clarify.
Thank you sir,

Give a minor race a bunch of planets. Sometimes this is the kick start needed to get them starting to act more like a major race and begin their expansion. It not impossible to enhance a minor to the point where they start conquering major races.

Occasionally, just selling planetary invasion tech to a minor will get them to invade a few planets.

I once had the Arceans surrender to a minor civ in DL. Half way through my next war, the Altarians did as well. The Snathi ended up being the largest power BY FAR, so I have the dubious distinction of winning a conquest victory with my military ranked second

One of the many reasons I now play with surrenders disabled.
