Mumblefratz, you *are* a Gerontocrat.

Mumblefratz, you *are* a Gerontocrat.

Admit it, and come aboard.

In the root Gerontocracy thread, I made a less-than-half joking post that our little empire should recruit the venerable Mumblefratz. Others, including our emporer, agreed, but the Metaverse has no impressment functions (read up on British Navy history) and we can't figure out how to place influence starbases in forum threads.

I mean no disrespect to the Diplomats. Y'all are a mighty horde led by a large core of strong players, but you kind of lack flavor. We have a comfy home for a man whose avatar is Martin Luther, whose screen name seems a foreshadow of our empire, and whose constructive curmudgeonliness is a legend on this forum.

I only wish Mumble were not quite the scoremonster that he is. I'm poaching on style grounds here, but confess I understand that if he'll jump ship, our empire's rank might go up.

You might want to consider joining the Metaverse League.

That would be somthing a bit different i might consider? I havn't tried a medium map with abundant everything, and very slow tech rate, i was thinking of starting such a game soon actually.

My experience with medium or less maps is that when the fighting starts, you get a couple of dramatic fleet battles and then the AI flops down dead, game over. Larger maps seem better for allowing an AI that can assemble powerful fleets in a relatively ongoing manner to keep challenging you.

I'm sure it depends on difficulty level as well but you can get some rather dramatic results at very low levels of ship tech and very small numbers of ships. A rag tag fleet of 3 small attack 5 or so fighters along with a single medium attack 10 destroyer may be enough to conquer the strongest AI at the point fighting starts, or then again it might fail by the barest of margins and you're on an immediate scramble to survive. The flip of a coin on a single battle can make a huge difference.

However, it's not so much any one game style as the fact of being forced to play games that you're totally unused to. Perhaps as time goes on it will become more familiar but so far each round has been both very unique and interesting.

The last time i played a medium map, i used maso level and the Drengin managed to compile a huge fleet very early in the game. I had to steer clear of that fleet while attacking their other ships before they could fleet up. Once i had a powerful enough fleet to kill their big fleet, i did so and the game was basically over and no longer held my interest.

That would never happen on larger maps!

Mumblefratz, your sense of honor makes no sense in justifying your continued subservience to the empire of so-called Diplomats. Don't make us figure out how to do get a virtual press gang together. You belong with us, and coming along peacfully will be better for everyone concerned.

After all, the very fact that you profess loyalty to the first organization you joined is exemplary curmudgeonliness, which lends truth to the the claim that you are destined to be one of the Gerontocracy.

Plus, if you're a Gerontocrat, you don't have to apoligize for taking your cane to the whippersnappers when they get out of line. The Galactic Diplomats have a great many apparent military wins to explain in diplomatic terms...
