Guide to basic gameplay and controls?

Hello there...
I'm completely new to this game. I'm sure I'll love it when I figure it out. I've read the manual, and the 'beginners guide', but neither of these are basic enough. I need to know the absolute basics of interacting with the game.
For example, trying to get a ship to go somewhere seems very hit and miss. Clicking on a ship in the ship list and then right clicking on the map doesn't do it, for example. Exactly what does?
And why is the 'turn' button sometimes green? Are you meant to keep doing stuff intil it turns green, and then click it?
Why do ships sometimes suddenly move without you clicking the 'turn' button, eg if I select 'auto-survey'? And so on. The list of basic unanswered questions is long!
Is there a compete idiot's guide out there? I'm sure I can get onto the good stuff (looks great) once I can control the basic elements!
