I only buy the occasional graphic novel compendium. Good stuff:
Ultimate Spider-man
J. Michael Straczinksi's Rising Stars (really really good)
Alan Moore's Watchman
The Preacher
SandMan
Books of Magic

I haven't read the X-Men in a while. In the early-to-mid-70s I bought X-Men #1 for 9 bucks. Since then I've always stored it, along with my other valuable comics in a dry dark closet. 5 years ago we had a big ice-storm that ended building an ice damn on the roof. Water collected, ran in the attic and down into the closet drenching X-Men #1 and all the other books.

I forgot to mention Kurt Busiek's Asto City. Another intelligent adult super hero series.

Also, A Distant Soil is a great sci-fi comic series.

I used to buy DareDevils and Punisher stuff and I was a huge Batman fan, up untill that crappy Knightfall storyline with Azrael becoming the new Batman and yadda yadda.
Only good thing to come out of that was Bane.

Comics nowadays just don't give the same sensations. How many comics nowadays can you open and actually be able to catch the smell of the paper?
It's all this horrible shiny stuff nowadays.

The best authors (european) are:
Moebius
Milo Manara
Enki Bilal
and of course... Carlitus (it's true, i winned a commics aid for young artists 16 years ago, when i have 16)
i don't like the american comics of heroes, marvel & dc, all comic-books are created with little time, and this harms the results. But i recognize that are good americans comic authors, specially when them make comics for adults

"adults" means comics that aren't of heroes or for childrens. I don't mean porn commics.
There's also some good manga comics (i love Akira)

I'll got with Chris anytime!
Sandman, Books of Magic and Watchmen are best of the best, then I of course read Manga. As much as you can throw at me

Mostly Dutch and Belgian stuff none of you will have ever heard about: Familie Doorzon, Franka, Thorgal and so on.

US-comics wise, I read just about all Marvel/Image material that gets released in Dutch, which is mostly X-Men/Spiderman/Spawn. Spawn majorly stinks, by the way. Don't know why I buy that. Todd McFarlane never could draw, his successors aren't much better.

When I was reading Marvel comics in the 80's, one particular artist whose work really stood out was Art Adams.

Dave McKean and Enki Bilal are my favs. on mangas i only like Otomo (who did Akira) and i´m not interested in any super heroes at all.

I used to collect a comic book called "Marshal Law" back in the 80's, anyone remember that one?

crae: todd macfarlane has also gone 'animal farm' and become one of those he rebelled against, apparently. a lot of artists are leaving him, or trying to. i think the last spawn i bought was in the 20's though...

crayon: dat doet mij op de een of andere manier denken aan Storm en Trigië. De Generaal was ik helemaal vergeten. Zeer jaren tachtig.

mig: yeah well, he did leave Marvel to form Image about a decade ago or so. Never really could take Image/TopCow seriously seeing they had Todd "let's cover up my lack of talent with an overdose of incorrect details" McFarlane and Rob "Steroids and Silicones" Liefeld hopping around. Fortunately there were also small gems like BattleChasers and Crimson.

Let's see.

My current favourite is Sojourn, from CrossGen.

I love Groo! Groo is the best (cheese dip anyone? )

I also read Scion, Meridian and Ruse from CrossGen.

Love Knights of the Dinner Table, and read Knights of the Dinner Table Illustrated, Everknights and any of the Dungeons & Dragons series that come out.

Artesia is an excellent title, as is Queen & Country, and I'm also reading Age of Bronze.

My hubby is into the superhero titles, but I prefer fantasy and historical fiction stuff

I like comics where you can have a laugh...Garfield...what about walt's snowwhite cartoon Somehow it seems to me there has been put more effort in older comics. I loved Buck Danny and Blueberry, and Kapitein Rob..

I've got CrossGen's Meridian graphic novel. It's really quite good. I'm tempted to pick up their other graphic novel compilations: Ruse and Scion.

hmm..
Ultimate Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man

Tons of Batman, Nightwing TPB and graphic novels.

I used to read and still own a lot of Image titles including full runs of Witchblade, Gen 13 and other ones.

By far, some of the best all-time reads are Kingdom Come, Marvels, any Jeff Loeb/Tim Sale Batman work and of course Frank Miller's Batman title, The Dark Knight Returns.

Joe Madureira drawing the Uncanny X-Men was supremely great.

man the list goes on and on and on.

Chris,

Ruse is very good, but it took me a while to get used to it.

Scion is good as well, but Sojourn is definitely my favourite of the CrossGen titles.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the the style of most of the new wave of inkers and colorists (i.e. those that use Photoshop etc) used in some skins. Tried to do it myself once or twice but it seems I need more practice.
