Why I am not a good Community member.

When I started skinning, I uploaded my first skin in November 2007, I read that WinCustomize did not want members just to submit skins but to be good a community members & participate in the forums etc. Unfortunately I suffer from a very rare metabolic disorder that prevents my muscles from producing energy which results in a severe fatigue problem, (& a lot of pain) that knocks my brain & memory completely out of gear, the brain apparently takes a lot of energy to run. Because my condition is progressive it is affecting my writing skills (my spell checker is beeping almost continuously) & accentuates my fatigue problems to such extent that I am no use to man or beast, which accounts for my rare appearances in the forums virtually non-existent.

You may wonder how I manage to skin,  with the help of Stardock Virtual Desktops I open my last blind (I only skin WindowBlinds) in SkinStudio on one desktop so that I can see what I did before with one mouse click. I then work on another desktop for my new skin, I open images from my previous skin in Gimp & duplicate them which immediately gives me a template for my new image & I do not have to concentrate too much on pixel sizes which would increase the fatigue problem.

I have thought a long time about writing this, I am not looking for sympathy with this post, just stating facts, but felt I should let you know why I do not participate on the forums. When I found WinCustomise (2005) I was a lot fitter than I am today & I am so thankful I decided to have a go at skinning, it has now become a big part of my life, I feel I would be climbing the walls by now as my life has become more & more restricted by this illness.

I figure you have to be a GREAT community member. This must have taken a lot...courage and need to be understood...along with an enviable honesty.

Would Dragonspeak help you to dictate posts and maybe someone in the community can suggest voice driven software that can help with automated tasks?

Major courage CY....I salute people with your kind of courage.  :sun:

We all do what we an to the best of our ability (or we should).  We can ask no more of our members.  Thanks for doing what you can.

A good community member is based on more than just the time spent in the forums or how much they have downloaded or uploaded. There are many members who are not in the forums very often for one reason or another. There are others(my group, lol) who couldn't skin their way out of a paper bag. There are also those who just can't afford to be subscribers to the site. Each and every one is still a valued community member.

To put it simply,if you feel like you are part of the community and enjoy coming here to WC,you are a good member, imo. Even if you only  come to read the posts of others or ask for help  you are using the site for a good purpose. How often someone is able to do this is irrelevent.

As Doc said, your courage and honesty is quite commendable. That alone is enough to make you a great community member and I wish you all the best now and in the future.:sun:

I'm curious as to why you think your not a good community member? Was it something someone said or did? Inquiring minds would like to know. :|

I think you described why you are a good community member rather than why you're not. You're doing what you can to add to the value of the community, noone can ask for more (well... some people probably can, but don't mind THEM, they are insignificant).

5* - Five star community member for sure.

Personally I barely hit 3* , but I'm working on it...   ;P

Don't get me wrong in this... But we hope that all of our members here are participants and not just those who would come and go. Not being heard of and such. We as a community want to hear from our members in all ways. Which ever it may be. Good or bad and /or that of a good member or even that of a bad one. We are not here to judge people. But hear to get along with everyone and have a goodtime. Which we do and in so we help each other and try to make other feel wanted at this community.

You fit and that makes you as good as anyone else. We care for all of our members as best we can. We can only do what we know of even so. For like I said we do not know anything till people get involved and participate with the community. The forums are one place to start things. But this is more than just that "It is the Windows Customization Community" also. Posting works of art is a way of expression of what you like in art and/or can do with art. Artist everywhere come here and look at your artworks and those of this community to see what they may have ideas for or that they can get ideas for. With Stardock programs and those of many other art programs the world has to offer. We here at this art community strive to impress others with our designs for art.

You are part of that and so is the many other people that come to this site and participate in this community. So in all "all things work together for the total out come of this art community. Being part of it and doing things to add to it is your part to just that. Making it a better place for youself and those that come here.

Welcome aboard and I hope your health will improve. We all care and want the best for any member of this community..!

mickeko got it right...;)

It's not so much about 'contribution/participation' as it is about 'attitude'.

There's no law requiring a person to participate....but there are several relating to conduct....if and when you do.

Sadly you are not alone with  debilitating illness hindering your interaction within the Community, I can think of two former Wizops who could not continue to participate as they had wanted to, and I know there are others in the general community.

As long as you enjoy Stardock/Wincustomize.com/the Community ..... that's the main thing...;)

DrJBHL - I must admit I have not thought about speech recognition software, funds are a bit short at the moment, but definately something to save for.

Webgizmos - No one has said anything, it is just me wishing I could have more input to this great site & what people might think.

Jafo - I do realize that I am not alone in this Community with a problem, it was something I meant to put in my post, there are probably more members here than you would imagine, people with serious conditions tend not to advertise the fact. One thing I learnt on my long journey to diagnose my problem, ( it took two years) was how lucky I was to be as well as I am.

In sweden people with disabilities get aids like this paid by health insurance. I don't know how things are in the UK, but you could check for foundations that donate funds for this kind of thing?

Thanks mickeko, your Country has a good reputation for looking after disabled people, we have no such scheme here, not that I can complain about the UK, I have only been employed one year in the last 21, due to my health, but have managed to live comfortably in that time, I also have a very good family, wife & two daughters & grand-daughter, who understand my illness well & how important my computer is to me, & will help to gather funds towards software to solve my problem.

I am bringing this post to the top again, to let you know, thanks to the Doc's suggestion, I am now the proud owner of speech recognition software. With the help of my family, I have been able to buy Dragon NaturallySpeaking and I am amazed how efficient it is, so now, hopefully, I will be able to take part in the forums again.

CountryYokel, I too am in the same boat as you, I have gone beyond stir crazy in these four walls, I was just now on Private messages speaking to someone special from the communtiy about my problems, just to get it of my chest, when I seen your post....I for one think you are awesome, its amazing how strong your honesty and integrity becomes when you fall prey to a dehibilitating illness, I mean I used to think I was quite an honest and strong person before, but now, since my illnesses it seems I value the simple things much more in life and believe a lot more strongly in the main principles that govern our lifestyles, like being a part of something for example, its a simple thing, yet sometimes so hard to achieve for people like us........so before I get all emotional, I would just like to say, I always thought you were a big part of the community, I often see your name here and there, but now I understand how much it takes out of you to do that, it makes me proud to be even remotely associated with you........so from one confined man to another, I salute you my friend, you're a very special person with an awesome family...cheers CountryYokel....Godbless and Godspeed my friend, may your illness one day be cured k6 k6 :andrew:

That's very true, when we said for better or for worse, 38 years ago, I do not think my wife could have imagined there was going to be so much "worse", but I am very thankful that she was true to her word, and she, and my two daughters, have done a great job looking after me these last 16 years.

Thuglifejunior, thank you, the thing is you must not let it get you down, easy to say, I know, I spent quite a long time in a hospital in London trying to find out what was wrong with me, there were some very tragic cases in the same ward, which made me feel how lucky I was to be as well as I was, and this is what I think about if I feel down about my situation.

Looking on the bright side if I was still farming I would not have had the time to discover Wincustomise.
