Tech tree question

I'm thinking about picking up Twilight of the Arnor, and I have a question about the tech trees.

I know the races now all have their own tech tree.  What I'm wondering is, have the long strings of incremental size improvements been eliminated?  Are there still three or four "Laser" techs (for instance) that all are the same, just with less weight or cost?  (And so on for armor, and various other techs.)

Yes, but not all races have the SAME incremental improvements. Those techs haven't changed much. The other techs like economic, research, factories, etc have massive changes.

Some techs are RACE specific. Let's say you capture or influence an Iconian world with a pop of 16b. If your Terran, you will end up with all the food and morale building getting destroyed as you can not get those techs. So, you'll wind up with a 16b down to 8b population loss on the next turn and you will not get any of the Iconian morale buildings. You'll have to choose to let the population drop or purchase a Xeno farm and be left with 16b unhappy Iconian campers!!!

The answer to your question is - yes.
I would get ToA! It really gives an individual feel to each race. One of the best games I played I traded for tech that my race didn't have and the AI used the resources and techs I traded to them to attack me 2 turns later! I barely survived. The tech I traded for was an influence based tech and luckily it was enough to flip the Korx to my side which if they didn't, I would never have been able to keep up economically (sp).
