Dread Lords campaign in DA - invulnerable ships

I'm on the apocalypse mission of the Dread Lords campaign, playing under Dark Avatar. I hit this issue where the AI has a ship that isn't capable of being destroyed. I can throw everything I want at it, and it always resets itself to 9 HP (It's a freighter) after taking damage. It's pretty much decimated a fleet that was finally ramping up to be ready to fight off the dread lords - I was able to sacrifice two or three medium-sized ships to destroy a single freighter, so it was costly, but I was finally beginning to make some headway. Now I cannot possibly finish the campaign. That lone ship has cleared the way for troop transports to take over my previously well-defended planets.

Anybody else run into an issue like this? Do I need to totally restart the mission? If so, I'll probably just stick with random scenario games, as this is the second mission I've seen an invincible ship. Luckily in the first, the goal was to take a drengin planet, so I was able to just race for it while that ship ate up all my defenders.

You mean a fighter?

In any case, due to the way the battle system works, there must always be a winner--mutual destruction is not an option. This means that when both sides are destroyed, the last ship that was alive on each side is compared, and whichever one was stronger is restored with 1 HP (there was a bug that caused it to get its full HP rather than just 1--this should be fixed in 1.6).

To make sure you beat it, all you need to do is attack it with enough ships that it cannot kill them all in the first round. So look at the intelligence report for it, and see how many weapons it is armed with. Then send a fleet of tiny ships against it numbering that many+1. You should then be able to take it out with one ship surviving, so it will stay dead.

I should have followed up at some point, but better late than never, right? I did realize what was up with the thing, and it's just what you said. I was sending a single vessel against theirs and of course my single vessel was never the stronger of the two, so it would lose. The full HP bug naturally made the issue much weirder, as well as contributing to the appearance of invulnerability. In any case, thanks for the response!

Oh and "freighter" should have been "frigate". Oops.
