The nightmare that is ship design management...
... or damn I was drunk when I designed that - what is it?

I might be missing somethong here, but after playing many games with several custom races, I end up with masses of ship designs. They are hidden. When I am in a game and want to get my customised "Fighter III" what techs do I research? Redundant designs clog up the ship list but it is necessary to be in a game and to have to have researched the appropriate techs for the redundant ships to become accessible. (I don't mess with game files!)
With a bit of work and clicking on lots of techs in the research ship design requirements can be found and techs required can be roughly determined but up to beta two at least, the techs listed are not always correct or complete.
I cannot understand why a design management screen has not been implemented yet. It doesn't need to even be part of the game proper - it probably should have been implemented as a tool outside the game. I want to know stuff like date and time created, techs required, basic stats, and race built for. I want to know exactly what modules are on it. Names of modules, not just pictures! Many look the same to me. It would be nice if this info were printable.
The thinking behind ship design management seems a little fuzzy to me. Here is what I think should happen. I'm honestly not sure what actually happens
Stock races should have a set of ships that are unique to each race and each new ship design applies to the stock race under which it was created only. New designs should be carried forward from game to game. Designs should not leak from one stock or custom race to another.
When designing a custom race a base set of ships from one of the stock or custom races should be selectable. Optionally new designs could be carried across. A new set of ships should be created as a unique and separate set for each new custom race. Designs shouldn't pop up for one race after having been created for another race. Ship design sets should be unique per custom or stock race.
The designers seem to have sorted out the mechanics of building new ship designs and I love it. The management of those designs is a mess though.
As an aside running Galciv II and the three Betas have all been rock solid so far on my Athlon 2400, 512MB, dual screen, Nvidia GeForce 6200, SB audigy Player, SCSI tape drive, boring bits, WIN2K rig.
Thanks Stardock people and Brad for a great game.
