Updated the latest patch and now the game will not start!!

I just updated the game yesterday and now I cannot load the game! Prior to the update everything ran OK. Even after the update it started and ran Ok, but now today I cannot even get in to the game. Everytime it loads the music comes on but the screen goes black and gives me an "out of range" error! Help some one tell me what the heck is going on!!!!!! Couple of things. First this download started automatically and didnt tell me it was a beta, I know this because I downloaded and installed this twice...first time I thought I might have had a corrupted file. but it is definately a buggy patch. There should be a big warning! second: I attempted to delete and download the entire initial game again this didnt work, so then I reset my puter back to an earlier restore point AND installed from dist rather than download and it continues to malfunction. I know I have reasonable up to date drivers and I've tried rolling this game AND my puter back several times via several methods all to no avail. Well, without any debug.err and/or SmartException report, the devs will have lots of trouble to spot where the bug is.

The latest patch is a "beta" release, not an official patch. I noticed that my SD client offered to "update" my GC game with the BETA patch as well. Evidently, by default, the client is set to offer Beta material, though you can turn it off.


Stardock, this is just asking for trouble. I think many people are "updating" their games with the Beta material, thinking its a new official patch. Beta material should be clearly sequestered, and designated with a "download at your own risk" warning, and not availiable via any "program updates" menu.


Indeed, the "version" that was listed as availiable for update in the SD client was only designated with a "b" in the version number. Had I not been following the forums, I may not have understood the meaning of this. I personally dont think unofficial beta material should be availiable via the updater at all. People should have to go out of their way to download it from the site, if they want to mess with it.

I'm having trouble with the beta patch as well. Some random crashes and slow performance. (just so you know its not a user error: computer tech for 8 yrs and I have a p4 2.8ghz w/ 1gb ram and a 9600pro)
I wish there were an easy way to restore to previous version. I'm seeing what I can do in that regards in stardock right now.

I agree on a previous note: they really shouldn't default the updates to betas

BingJack, it says quite clearly during installation "This is a beta, and liable to have bugs as such. If you don't know what a beta is, DO NOT INSTALL THIS" while giving you the option. Someone in a similar thread said that you should be required to type it out, not just click yes. Damn microsoft and their enormous service agreements have made most people stop reading things, even if they are important.

Also, when will people EVER bother to search the forum before posting? There are hundreds of bug reports without SE debug.err files, and you can see what response they get. In fact, in the list right now, is a nearly identical problem. PLEASE put your bug reports up, it could be many reasons, Stardock aren't magical beings! (so they claim) Yet, you go "Bugs, fix, now!" without any real information.

All we can tell is, if it worked before, it isn't drivers. Other than that, all we can say is Beta is Beta.

Sublifer, There is. You can reinstall 1.0x in the downloads section. Also, if you check your debug.err, as a computer tech, check what is doing the crash, and email that to stardock, tell them exactly how it's gone wrong.

Yes, well, welcome to the mainstream. Brad said it well during a recent forum post...in some regards they are a victim of their own sucess. With the formerly much more focused demographic SD catered to, they could assume a certain level of saviness to all users. With the mainstream sucess of GC2 though, continuing to operate under this assumption is going to cause nothing but trouble. And wishing any differently isnt going to make it so.

Whether you like it or not, it has to be on SDC. That's stardocks main way of getting updates out quickly and easily. You can disable beta by turning off the "Show pre-release version" button.

However, I admit that with the fact they have gone mainstream, it would be better if they turned the default off. I agree that it is, for people who aren't used to very frequent and free updates, a pain to see which is safe, which is buggy when the choices are things like 1.10(b2).110 as opposed to 1.0x2

If they switched the SDC option of alphas, betas and gammas to off as an automatic, you would need to know what this means and accept it to get the download. This would be a wise thing to do, and save people who don't know what they're getting into the stress of having their game crash for reasons seemingly unknown.

Marcathonas, I'm a computer tech, but not a programmer... I can see "Debug error" messages but I can't tell what is relevant. Can you take a message like this : "Unable to find required tech ImpossibleTech for PirateShip" seriously?

Odd, I was hoping like hell you would either be able to figure it out or somehow had old drivers. Neither.
Impossible tech? errrr, Just done a complete search of my computer (and I mean COMPLETE, word for word in any and all possible files) and ImpossibleTech only shows the history of this page. No wonder it can't find it. Stardock are going to be needed with that matter by the looks of it.

The error with 'impossible tech' is also in my v1.0X.1'debug.err' and it works.
I also got it in 'GC2Ships.xml' under '..\Data\English\..'

PS: Windows XP does not search for text in files with unkown extensions - you have to tweak it first.

Irritating, thought I did. Told it to search inside the file, did nothing. So, what might have caused the problem? Does the average debug.err contain that many could not find file errors?

I've gotten a chance to play the 1.0x version that I've reinstalled from beta and now the game is worse. Granted, I haven't rebooted, but I wanted to post this first. When the game was launched, at the main menu, all buttons but 2nd are white with no words, the 2nd is all gray, anywho, I remembered where the load button was and had similar issues on load game screen, ie blank buttons, then tried to reload my saved game and the game crashed. It might have been a version conflict (played and started that game in beta) but that wouldn't explain the screwy menus. well, I'm gonna reboot and try again, if saved game won't work then I'll try to make a new one. Keep your fingers crossed. I may have to go back to the beta version.

The latest patch is a "beta" release, not an official patch. I noticed that my SD client offered to "update" my GC game with the BETA patch as well. Evidently, by default, the client is set to offer Beta material, though you can turn it off.


BingJack, it says quite clearly during installation "This is a beta, and liable to have bugs as such. If you don't know what a beta is, DO NOT INSTALL THIS" while giving you the option

I rebooted, most issues were gone but it still crashed when I tried to load that game... musta been a beta issue cuz I started a new game and have done fine so far.

Couple of things.

First: This download started automatically when I logged on to SDC AND it didn't inform me that it was a beta, I know this because I downloaded and installed this thing twice...first time I thought I might have had a corrupted file. but it is definately a buggy patch. There should be a big warning!

second: I attempted to delete and download the entire initial game again this didnt work, so then I reset my puter back to an earlier restore point AND installed from disk rather than download and it still continues to malfunction.

Now I am no noobie or a programmer, but I have build a machine or two in my time. I know I have reasonable up to date drivers and I've tried rolling this game AND my puter back several times via several methods all to no avail.

So how do I get my game re working (I was right in the midst of the campaign game and I wanna finish it

Hang on, I got the Beta through the downlaod section. How are they different downloads though?

Well, the download from the site contains an installer. So there are some warning popups in it. But if you use SDC, it will donwload only the needed files and replace them accordingly. If you have enabled the pre-release versions, you can donwload the betas. But you have warning about with SDC only whan you enable the pre-release versions, not when a new beta is about to be downloaded

Well, do you know that you can use SDC to uninstall GC2?

Well, there are some settings in SDC to control that behavior. BTW, any beta is identified by small [b] in the version number
And if you don't wan the beta, you need to uncheck the prerelease version. And you should also enable archive on update. That way, getting previous versions will be easier

There is nothing posted in the download area or any kind of warning that popped up. Further there was nothing anywhere which explained what the (b) means. Only through this forum did the fact that it was a beta come to light! THERE NEEDS TO BE A BOLD WARNING ALL OVER THAT DURN DOWNLOAD FILE SO THAT PEOPLE KNOW.

however, all that is beside the point, which is of course what the heck did this monster of an update do to my machine and how can I get my game back up and running properly?

Oh and BTW I didnt purchase a pre release I purchased what I thought was a finished product, I just chose to download it from the sight rather than wait until the disk I ordered with it came in the mail.

As a final aside, I want to emphazise that the game ran perfectly fine after the initial download and install. It's only given me crap since I downloaded that infernal "unannounced" beta update.

So my original question still holds....what or how do I fix this thing????????????????????????

Have you tried to uncheck the "show pre-realease" version in SDC?

BTW, your debug.err file look horrible in your first post. It may be have been better to put it in another post.

Have you tried to uninstall through SDC?

I am wondering, one user in another thread did have problem since the game did think there was 2 displays (he was using a docking station for his laptop). I see that the game saw 2 sound devices. I am wondering if it is the problem with the beta.

BTW, if it is the case and nobody else reported it, you can bet that you will have the problem with the non-beta 1.1 update. That is typically the kind of this that can be easily overlooked.

I finally fixed the problem (at least I was able to get the game back up and running & see it running). It appears that somehow the game patch had installed in to a whole new and different directory from my initial download, and then as it went through the "system testing" settled on a display resolution of 1600 x 1280 since my Vid Card could handle that it promptly re-configured my game cfg file to that res. As it happens that resolution is beyond the range of my current monitor hence the "Beyond the range" message I was seeing. Once I rolled the game config resolution back to 1024 X 768 the game ran OK. (although I hasten to add that I did not play a full scenario and when I tried to run a saved file from the campaign I previously played it quickly crashed. Again though I guessing that's because its been updated to the 1.1 and Im running the 1.0 versions.

I wish to thank all of you who wrote in with your helpfull suggestions and those who explained the nuances of stardocks downloads and website workings.
