Mass Genocide and some Gameplay questions.

Thanks for any replies guys.

I just realised today when playing Galciv that every battle in the game for planets consists of every person on the planet defending!! That means if you are invading you are litterally wiping out every last person! Its mass genocide! At first i thought you were just fighting a defence force till i did the maths. Wow

Well, what i came here to ask is the following, which i cant seem to figure out on my own... Sorry if they are dumb questions.

When you have a fleet, does the defence count for the whole fleet or is it still just individual ships. Eg, if i built a ship with massive sheilds only, would he help defend the rest of the fleet or would he be useless for all intents and purposes?

Secondly something i really cant figure out is the influence starbases. Do they add a global influence, eg it doesnt really matter where you build them or do they only influence planets within their range. Or should they be placed near to borders you want to "push" into enemy space? I have tried all three and cant seem to notice the difference, documentation doesnt explain and the planet interface shows no bonus whatsoever!

Finally does having a high espionage value and continuing to pump money into spying actually get you any of the enemies tech. As so far it doesnt seem to for me even though it states it should. I did seem to get tech when i conquered a planet, but not just as a random discovery. Which was a let down.

Ohh finally i got a free spaceship last turn It was called a star ranger or something, and had the name lucky ranger, it kicks ass quite a lot, i will get a screeny and put it in this post when i can. It was one of the random events, i love them as they seem to make the game so much more fun.

Well would be nice to hear other peoples experiences and thoughts on this.

1. Each ships defenses apply only to that ship and the total value defends against each type of weapon attack.

2. Influence starbases should be placed near your borders to push them out. You won't notice much effectiveness out of them until you upgrade them a couple times by sending more constructors to it.

3. After you reach high espionage it is a matter of time until you steal techs, and they aren't too frequent.

I may have encountered a bug then because i have taken hits of 0 damage from ships that had mixed beams/guns with my lucky ranger. It made no sense :/

If your shields are greater than or equal to his weapons then this will happen fairly frequently. Basically, the attacker rolls an attack value between 1 and his attack rating, and the defender rolls a defense value between 1 and his defense rating. If the defense roll is equal or greater than the attack roll, then you take no damage. Otherwise you take the difference between the two numbers.

Defense systems which don't match up with the attacking weapon type only count at the square root of their value. So if you have 4 shields versus missiles, you will roll a defense between 1 and 2.

Actually, you're only fighting the tax-paying population. So all the little kids and disabled aliens and presumably the healthyy ones poor enough to get a tax refund are still okay.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but an Influence Starbase (IS) can serve three purposes in extending your overall influence:

1. Exactly as HEEGZ has said - Placed on your borders, they increase your physical range of influence.

2. Influence is Relative - It applies to your empire as a whole. By building an IS anywhere, its output contributes to your entire sphere of influence (i.e., its bonuses apply to your overall influence progression -- the "growth" of your overall area of influence).

3. To Piss Off Your Enemies! In lower difficulty levels you can build these near an AI planet to try to decrease his hold on said planet. If the race doesn't destroy the IS, you have a decent chance of taking the planet over (if it currently has a low morale -- 40% or less). This can take time, though (not too sure how long, but it's dependent on the current morale level of the planet).

If I'm wrong on any of these issues, feel free to clarify (because if I am, I've been playing wrong so far!! )

I observed this as well.

In fact I was about to make a post of this.

Every one on the planet cant fight!!!

Look at the conquering of nations. Eveeryone is not killed, only the soldiers are.(and some of the diplomatic leaders)

Also what about the crippled. They cant fight in an actual, hightech battle! NO SIR!

I wouldn't say only soldiers are killed, fighting and bombings in populated areas do result in civilian deaths. But I do agree that the numbers involved in fighting for planets is a bit ridiculous, but hey, it is just a game. If someone can change it through mods or what have you, I'd be interested, but I've come to just accept it as part of the games inherent "gaminess" (pun intended).

Yah, when I have my planet being conquored by aliens. I damn well want everyone out there on the front lines.

Children? Bah, give them a plasma rifle, searing hot energy is just a deadly no matter who fires it.

Crippled people? You don't need legs to drive a hovertank!

The elderly? They can intimidate the enemy by being really crotchety and/or smelling bad and beat them upside the head with their canes.

My empire is like Starship Troopers, "Everyone fights, nobody quits. If you don't fight I'll kill you myself."

would they have as many sick and crippled years from now? maybe they'd have better medicine to let everyone within a set age fight...
anyway, u got enough answers from these guys, so, in order to just stop the useless repeating of information, read them.

lolz nice one, thats what i thought. I guess its like a war of the worlds situation, where the whole populace fights and the losers are shipped off to be slaves/food/fertilizer

So the starbases can be put on the edge of your system to push borders. Thats cool to know, i will keep a watchfull eye out to see if starbases actually push borders out or if it is centered on the planets.

Thanks again for all your info guys.

As to the lucky rangers, if you add "luck" as one of your bonuses you get a bunch of these. They are very helpful in pushing up your military score early in the game. In one game I ended up with 12 of them, and they often came in pairs (one found one week, a second found the next week). By getting these I can usually avoid others declaring war on me.

Not true. Defense rolls are between 0 and the defense rating. Attack rolls are between 1 and attack rating.
Otherwise a 1-attack ship wouldn't be able to hurt a 1-defense ship and the combat would never end.

I just lost mine though, got into war with the trader guys, the peacefull yellow dudes and the angry reds im now bieng systematically destroyed planet to planet. Even the humans are starting to think im against them, my super culture is making them angry lol.

I think this is going to be my first loss. But the cool thing is its fun getting a whupping Thats what i get for being the super civilized nation with crap weaponry, and trading away all my super lazer tech!
