Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework fails to install

I have my computer set to automatically apply the windows security update.  For the last several weeks Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) has failed to install and is on a continuous loop of attempting.  I have tried to install it manually, cleaned out my temporary, looked for a corrupt install in add/remove programs, and read the Microsoft support article ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887219 ) which was linked on the support page.  I think I understand from that article that there was once a problem which has since been resolved in which the installation failed.  However, I still cannot install the update even manually.

I know that some Stardock applications make use of Microsoft .NET Framework and I am wondering if i have to unload things, or if it would hurt my applications to get a different version of Net Framework.

At the very least I would like to get my computer out of the loop it is in, constantly nagging me about the update and leaving an icon in my tray.

Thank you.

edited to add that subsequent updates have installed without a problem.

You don't need it and hide it on the MS update site.

It's the first time [for me] that an update has failed to dl....

I have a feeling the fault is somehow with the new updater itself....

Check 'Services' and make sure 'Auto Update' is enabled and set to 'Automatic'........

If you want to give Microsoft a breather this month , here's the manual installs: Link

I feel like I'm talkin' to myself.........

Anyway....I replicated the failure twice (I got the updates yesterday) and these two methods fixed both (pick one or both):
#1
. Start, click Run, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll in the Open box, and then click OK.
. Start, click Run, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll in the Open box, and then click OK.

#3 If you want to just wait, that's fine too.....the problem is in fact the Update site.

hehe... hi Gary!  Thanks, I like your first answer best.  That fix came with so many warnings...  I didn't know I could hide them.  Temporary spot where things that download in bits go to gather themselves.  I think i cleaned that spot out.

How you doing?  I got a camera!  Its a spiffy little Sony... and already i have eleven downloads even if it isn't a very good picture.  hehe

Sorry, Gary...ya ain't gettin' mine...

BTW....I'm getting fairly frequent 'not respondings' with IExplode....usually having to kill the process and restart....been like that for a few days now....

#1 didn't do anything regarding getting the updates to dl/install....

...moving on to #2 ...

I've been having that too.

Do both of you have IP 3.0 installed?
Gary...no, not me...
There use to be a registry switch to turn off the BHO's....I can't remember what it was, but it's around here.....somewhere. It sounds like one or both of you may have latched onto a hijacker. If you have a spyware proggie installed that locks the IE Start Page it won't launch, or if it does,it's a blank. A hijacker would change your Start Page and thus create the problem.

Try running this: Link

what is IP 3.0?

I have my regular start page

OK, I'll try that.

I'm running a quick spyware scan right now.  I ran trend-micro a few days ago, the complete scan, and it was ok.  MSN antispyware runs every night and adaware runs frequently.
