Do different races still have different tech trees?

If so, how do I pick which tech tree a custom civ should follow?

The trees are chosen by your abilities.

there are 2 answers to this.

 

In crusade the tech trees are based upon racial abilities (slaver, synthetic, etc).  In the 2.5 base game there's a bug and tech trees are kind of broken at the moment, but I believe they will also be based upon abilities too..

Crusade selects certain Techs based on the race abilities and race type

Base game still uses different Tech trees for different races (bug has now been fixed).
