Icon Packager - change icon on one shortcut link only

Win 8.1

Hello friendly people!

Maybe I am not looking in the right place, but is there a way to assign a specific icon to a single shortcut link I have created on my desktop? It's to a program and includes a buttload of command line variables. Half the time I use that desktop shortcut, half the time I run the program directly from the taskbar with no command line variables at all.

It's a REAL pain in the you-know-where to go through the Windows way of assigning a new icon, especially as finding a DLL or EXE that has an icon I want is near impossible. So as a long time user of Stardock software I googled for a way of collecting all DLL icons together into one place and choose from that. However I did not get that far, as in the search results was a reference to Stardock Icon Packager. I've never used it, never needed to until now, but maybe it can solve my problem. I just can't see how, though.

If someone can put me out of my misery, either by telling me how Icon Packager can change the icon for a single desktop shortcut, or by telling me it can't and I'll go look somewhere else.

Thanks!

Regards,

Graham

I may be able to assist you, but first I will need for you to answer a couple questions so that I have the full information I will need to help you. First , do you already have an icon picked out that you want to use as the new shortcut icon ? Second , what operating system are you using ? Windows 7 ?

I am using Win 8.1

I don't have a specific icon picked out yet, but was hoping to scroll through a list to see if I could find one I thought would be appropriate. If I can find out how to do that, I can apply that method to assigning any other icon to any other shortcut.

go here :   http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

This is a nice little utility that you don't have to install. It can just sit on your desktop or perhaps in your documents folder or wherever. To use it , just simply click on it. It allows you to change a single icon for any program or file on your PC, and shows what icon is representing that item presently. The web page where this is found is pretty self explanatory and can describe it for you in more detail. Also, make sure to select the proper download for your operating system, such as the 64 bit or 34 bit version. As far as finding an icon you like, there are tons of free ones all over the Web. You can even have one custom made for yourself for that matter. Once you find one that you like, all you have to do is store it in a location somewhere on your hard drive where it will remain without getting moved. As an example , I simply created a new folder on my hard drive and named the folder "misc. Icons" all the custom icons I use for some of my programs are stored in that folder. In the "Properties" window of those specific programs , I simply type in the correct path to the particular custom icon I want to display for that program.

Note: when browsing down the list in the File types manager, right clicking on a particular file or program will give you a drop down menu option of changing the icon for your particular selection.

Get back to me if you have any problems or issues and I will attempt to assist you further.    -- Ace --

Thanks, yes, I should create a folder called "icons" - in fact I will do that now :)

In fact, rather than browse everywhere for particular icons on my computer I'll just dump all .ICO files that I find in that folder, then select from that folder whenever I need to change the icon for one particular file.

Thanks for the assistance! All sorted now :)
