I've had a problem off and on with my laptop crashing/BSOD when playing flash based content (like youtube videos).

 

It's been good for about 6 months now so I was surprised when it again happened today. I restarted the computer and was confronted with another bluescreen. After several tries at rebooting and system repairs (failed......."windows could not repair"), I decided to reinstall the OS......clean slate, ya know.

All was fine after everything was installed (drivers, etc) but the computer crashed again when I tried to do the windows rating index (no bsod, just a sudden dump). I tried it twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

 

Did a windows update and the thing crapped out again after the reboot to install. I managed to get the lappy to start again and scheduled a chkdsk. Rebooted.

Waiting for CHKDSK to finish.....

 

Earlier, I have only had crashes when playing flash based video and I've read online about problems with adobe flash and ATI cards. But this seems different to me.

dunno...the fan's whirring away.......CPU temp is down to 70 C now.

By any chance, did you get a look at the BSOD? Did you plug anything via usb?

70 C for CPU and 81C for GPU at *idle* are *terrible* temperatures. As soon as your system starts doing anything, it will overheat and eventually crash. The CPU should be protected from physically burning out because it will throttle down once it gets to TjMax, but the system *will* crash and eventually something is going to burn out or melt inside that laptop.

Airflow seems to be blocked, you need to get it fixed ASAP.

I don't think it's airflow. As I have stated, there are many reports of failed thermal transfer paste applicaions, either low quality paste was used , not enough, or it dried out to a point that it was no longer effective. This on Asus Laptops from near new to a year or so old. Dust and dirt you can see, blocked airflow, you can feel. The only way to be sure about the thermal compound is to replace it.

Well, yeah, could be the thermal compound that has degraded over time too... or it could be a voltage problem (hopefully not). Only way to find out for sure is to get it fixed, and I wouldn't recommend extended uses of the laptop at those temperatures. Eventually a piece of solder or plastic is going to melt and then repairing the laptop will really become expensive.

Keep in mind that I:

1. Don't know what thermal compound is called in Norwegian.

2. Don't know if it's easily found in any store here.

3. Where or how to apply the crap!

ThermalCompound, Heat paste, etc. just tell them you need the goo that goes between the CPU and the heatsink. ;) Any computer repair place will have it. Arctic Silver is well known around most shops but any high quality brand will do.

Apply about a matcheads worth, not too much, and apply it in a thin layer evenly across the chip. You can google up a video or two on the subject if needed.

Edit: Cool, you found it locally. There is a video on applying it on the newegg link you might want to watch anyway, not much difference between a desktop and a laptop.

If you can get the damn thing apart (and you can) then you can do this. :thumbsup:

Some of the reapplied compound repairs reported temp drops of 30-40c over what it was running at before. I hope you get similar results.

This happened to me once.  I had to open the machine and manually pull out/air-blast the dust badgers (more aggressive than bunnies).  After that, I couldn't tell if my fans were off because they were so quiet.   :ninja:

The WEI is a benchmark tool, it will run things under load. You will probably get the same results wth any other benchmark tool that loads up the CPU and GPU. Ditto for any software/game that requires any 'horsepower' to run.

Do not run anything under load until this is fixed.  I wouldn't run it AT ALL, PERIOD... until it's fixed.

New enough to have an I7 CPU. Tim posted about an overheating problem with it a while back. A Google search found others with this same issue.  The ones that didn't point to dust/dirt pointed to bad thermal mastic.

He cleaned the machine and it helped, but apparently the core problem remains.

I'm not convinced it's the CPU or GPU. The CPU has overheat protection....it would simply shutdown. The graphic card on the other hand has no such protection, but as far as I can tell, there's no distortions, resolution fallbacks or blackouts. That leaves memory, drivers and voltage (the latter more likely than the 2 former).

What I really need to see is the BSOD info.....
