A Problem with Empire and Kingdom

So from what I know, the Empire races have a special land type they prefer and the Kingdoms have a special land type they prefer, each one thriving on its respective land type.  But I'm curious: if this is the case, won't Kingdoms have an incentive to go to war against other Kingdoms and Empires with other Empires rather than the other way around?  After all, when you are choosing a war path, a major consideration is whether the land you are conquering is valuable to you.  All other things being equal, Kingdoms will have more land usage in common.

Your question is part of why I long ago suggested that sovereigns maintain some kind of personal, magical connection to the lands they restore (or twist, now that we have that term). I'm still hoping to see some sort of major magical process as the final stage of conquest in 'alien' terrain, otherwise the game will probably work like you describe or seem odd because it doesn't.

Or maybe it is already planned to be kind of auto-magical in the backround, so that when an Empire sov takes a Kingdom settlement (or vice versa), a new version of the 'spreading' begins that converts the land to the new people's needs.

Well, I suppose (sans lore) that there could be a time of strife in kingdoms and empire. Where civil war breaks out and the quest for supremacy is accomplished. Then, at the end of it all there was one large kingdom to rule them all, and one large empire to rule them all. Even then, with all power consolidated, there can only be one!

Regardless for the potential of peace, the Empire and Kingdom waged a war for superiority. The entire earth shook as the very land was transformed. Great Dragons and other beasts clashed over armies of epic proportions.

The final battle was a massive one, Channeler vs Channeler. This was a battle of more devastation than the entire war combined. Spells, counterspells, traps, time-shifts, dominations, The sky burned with fire, the earth opened up and ate legions, the air was electrified with the arcane ethers. It only took a spark, and the entire field was smote to dust. Only those with magic shielding, and a few monsters, survived the battle. While the remnants of the armies were either quagmired, routing, or dazed and confused, the channelers tore at full pace against each other. All mana spent, the final battle would be decided in melee. Their battle lasted for hours ... and finally it was decided who would be destroyed, and who would be the victor.
