Auto scout AI: Has it become wacked or has it always been

I don't know if I'm just beginning to notice this or if something has recently changed in the auto scouting AI. But they seem to need more micro now. If left alone they back track into known areas when there are shorter paths into gravity wells that need exploring. I used to build two or three and turn them loose without a second thought. Now I build any where from 3 to 5 to get the system mapped.

i noticed this kind of behavior myself right from the off, but I know exactly what you mean they do choose the werdest paths.

I noticed it when on one map a few were just disapearing off the map after ships under attack warning, i was baffled so i went back and watched em, they were back tracking through explored space and ging straight through a gravity well that was known to be a pirate base.

In short yeah they've always been a bit dumb in this regard lol It does make sense though because all ships, once assigned either user defined or automatic destination, are programmed to find the quickest route to their destination.

Another question for the community. In last night's game of Entrenchment I noticed my fleet showed a "scout" ship in it on the mouse over panel. However when I zoomed into the fleet I could not find a scout ship anywhere. I don't think I created the fleet with a scout ship by accident so I wondered if it was small glitch.

Okay good. I guess this means I'm paying more attention now rather than the AI took a hit between v1.12 and v1.15

They've always been whacked like that.  One of the AI's that needs a dramatic improvement.  Is it so hard to ask for it to not backtrack more than one jump, and not run through a pirate base (occasionally pirate bases have more than one warp line, and scouts love to just take a short-cut across them...)

I used to just shift control them for the first planet, then the 3rd or fourth, then one MUST make it to the star(s), past that, all is open game.

I usually build 5 and turn 'em loose.  generally I have 3 left by mid-late game.  this is inefficient, but it lets me work on other things.  and when I get the opportunity, I manually explore.

I think they've always been screwed.  Most of my scouts have always wasted tons of time when the game first starts jumping back through my home planet to scout another direction when they could have kept going the direction they were going.  I hate that.
