War Tax

I tried to search for this on these forums, but I couldn't find this specific topic in any of the thousands of hits I got. So please don't flame me or I will be forced to dispatch a Terror Star.

During one of the council votes a law was passed that madated a 10bc/turn tax for nations that are engaged in war. I am sitting around minding my own business when 5 other nations end up convincing eachother to go to war with me. Because of the tax I am losing 50bc/turn. I wasn't prepared for this and it hurts. Is it intended for the penalty to be applied to defending nations? So far the attackers aren't speaking with me, so any attempt to negotiate a truce is out of the question.

It is for any civ at war. Agressor/defender doesnt make any difference unfortunately.

Take that warmonger!

I'd drop the production slider back a little (if you havent already) and look at ways of strengthening the economy. 5 nations declaring war at once tells me that you've either annoyed the Drath or your military forces are not very strong (or both).

Either way you are in pretty deep trouble. You can try and fight it out but it may be such a drain you never recover. If you choose to restart remember to keep in mind that having a strong military force is very important, even if you do not plan on using it overtly.

The best way to ensure you dont get dragged into unwanted wars is being too risky to attack in the first place.

Si vis pacem, para bellum.

I'm afraid the war tax is imposed on any nation at war, whether you were the aggressor or dragged into it doesn't matter - which can be annoying if you're getting swarmed while trying to live up to the UP ideals.

You don't need to annoy the Drath for them to find someone to fight you. They don't even have to know you. They'll just start proxy wars because they can - oh, and they're the humble, good guys. It's a rough galaxy out there. ;p

I doubt the situation is intentional - though only the developers can answer that question with certainty - but whatever the case, it's there now. The only sure way to avoid getting dragged in wars is by building up a decent military. In the end, that's what counts although other skills such as diplomacy will give you some more leeway.

When nations declare war, there is a period of time they won't be willing to speak. After a few turns, they will be open for negotiations again. Being a super-diplomat will shorten the period of diplomatic black-out.

And that's when I click the 'Leave UP' button. I'll play along with those tools until they do something to piss me off, and then I'm out of the door.

What's that? 2 module upgrades for starbases? Bye.

10bc a week for war? Suck my exhaust and my missles, suckers.

Unless you rely on trade (which I really don't anymore - I used to, but I really try to avoid it now), it's usually the best option. :CONGRAT:

IMO war tax should be a percentage of your income, not a fixed amount per war. 10bc or whatever it was, even multiplied by 5, means nothing to anything but a tiny empire.

I would agree with SanChonino. Spice it up a little bit! You're at war with 5 species. Drop from the UP, try something new! Survive as long as you can and once you can talk to the individual AI's again, beg for peace. Secretly build your military back up inside a cluster of black holes at the Maw Installation, then jump on them for revenge like a fat girl on cake!  :d

Another way to not get ganged up on is getting the AI empires to fight eachother.

Yea I'm new, I just found the Leave UP option. I am so gone. I lost the game anyway, but at least I know this for the future.

Hey, it took me a while to figure out how to leave those suckers at the altar, too, but hey - I get cold feet sometimes, and I'm out. ;)
