ps. I could use some advice as I'm not well versed in alcohol. I am thinking of making homemade "smoothies" (fresh fruit, ice; maybe milk, vanillia, and some spices) and would like to add some to it. A friend suggested "kaluha" but I'm not totally sure what it is (or how it tastes), I was thikning vodka, But I'm not sure if there is a better fitting alcohol.
ha ha! my friend you've come to the right place. i used to work at a jamba juice, and every once in a while my coworkers and i would make special smoothies.
you'd think vodka would work, since vodka goes with everything. but take my advice: stick to rum or tequila (daquiris or margaritas). i wouldn't suggest kahlua or any alochol that's already very sugary. the thing is, when you mix the processed sugars in something like kahlua or triple sec with the natural sugars in fruit, it ends up tasting kind of, well, bad. that's my opinion anyway.
here are some of the recipies we liked:
mango margarita:
4-8 shots tequila
4-8 shots OJ (what portions depend on how strong you like your drink)
2 scoops lime sorbet
4 scoops IQF mangos
add crushed ice to produce the right consistency
berry daquiri
4-8 shots white rum
4-8 shots cranberry juice
2 scoops raspberry sorbet
3 scoops IQF strawberries
1 scoop IQF blueberries
(any mixed berries would probably do; add ice as before).
piña colada:
4-8 shots white rum
4-8 shots pineapple juice
2 scoops pineapple sherbert
2 scoops lime sherbert
1 scoop IQF bananas
2 TB dried coconuts
*IQF = internally quick frozen
be sure to use a high-quality blender. shaved or crushed ice will blend much more easily than cubed ice. you could also try a milk shake version that'd include roughly equal proportions of:
milk or chocolate milk
bailey's
kahlua
amaretto
*many others, such as creme de menthe or creme de cocao
ice cream or frozen yogurt
have fun, just be careful drinking sugary drinks - the sugar crash is worse than the hangover!
