IconX crashed and not working anymore

even uninstall / install doesn't work

Hi there,
I just bought the full version von IconX. First of all I had no problems at all with it until it suddenly chrashed. After that I couldn't manage to open the program anymore. It even doesn't work if I uninstall the program and the install it again afterwards.
All I get is the typical message about IconX-exe has problems and had to be shut down.
Any suggestions?

Can you check Event Viewer?

Start | Run "eventvwr.msc" [enter]
Application Tab
Anything with a red X in front of it about the time IconX crashed?

Thanks for the reply!
I checked it but don't know what it means...

Here's a screenshot: WWW Link

Please help me resolve this problem - I would really appreciate it!

If you double click on the first item a more detailed error will appear. See if one has to do with IconX. Copy and paste the description here.

When did you first install? How long did it work? Did you install anything else right before it broke?

Allright - I made another screenshot (smaller one) and it does have something to do with IconX:

Unfortunately it's all in german but I hope you can still find out what's wrong...

EDIT: By the way - I don't have DesktopX and everytime I try to start IconX, my computer always gives me a 'encountered a problem and needs to close'-message no matter what.

So it seems that the file 'directgui.dll' is the problem. But why?
Hopefully someone can tell me what to do about it...

(Maybe there's a problem with Windows Blinds? I have WB and IconX on my PC - perhaps I should deinstall both and reinstall them again. What do you think?)

Open the WindowBlinds Configuration screen and click on System Information. Copy/Paste that info here.

There you go:

PLEASE report all this information when submitting a problem report, especially anything related to per-pixel skinning. We don't know what's in that Dell you bought last July or the notebook with integrated graphics the office gave you. Per-pixel skinnin

You seem to have a combination of dates from the trial and purchased versions. You should un-install WB5, reboot, and re-install WB5 from Stardock Central. https://www.stardock.com/products/sdcentral/

After completing the installation please post the System Information again.

Seems to be exactly the same:

IMORTANT NOTE: I tried to open IconX while WB wasn't installed on the computer and still got the same 'encountered a problem and needs to close'-message. So it might be not a problem with the two programs combined after all.

Please help me with resolving this issue. This is really annoying...

Try this: http://corkyo.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?AID=82461

It's worked for me more than once!

These appear to be 5.1 via SDC:

Wblind.dll 2006/10/09 11:24:20
Wblind64.dll 2006/10/09 12:51:37
Wbsrv.dll 2006/10/09 11:40:18
Wbconfig.exe 2006/10/10 17:39:13
Wbui.dll 2005/12/06 22:29:06

These appear to be from 5.1 trial/standalone version

Wbload.exe 2005/12/21 01:04:47
Tray.dll 2006/04/28 19:27:49

You might try ODNT zapper WWW Link

It lets you remove ALL of a componant. If you have skins you like, copy them elsewhere.

Hi everybody and thanks for the replies so far.
I recently formated my whole PC and the IconX worked for about a week, now it's the same problem all over again...

ODNT wasn't able to solve it and I don't have any cache to emty...

This is very weird...

Hi everyone. Yesterday I tried installing IconX on the Laptop of my mother - same problem here. There's one thing those two PCs have in common: XP Home Edition
Maybe IconX has a problem with XP home since it seem to run perfectly on a XP Professional-system...
Any suggestions?
Thanx,
Dom

It now crashed too on the Professional-system - same issue.
So IconX in fact has the same problem on 3 different PCs in our house - Am I too stupid to use the program or what's the problem? Strange that noone seems to have these problems...
Please help!

If it worked for a week you should have a cache - make sure you have show hidden files checked

I'm running XP Home and haven't had that issue

are your graphics drivers up to date?

did you fix your WB files?

Hello again,
I finally solved the problem. It did work with clearing the cache after all.
Thank You so much for all Your efforts!
Now I have one last question: how do I change the trash-icon? Apparently it needs two icons (emty and full) and I don't know how to customize this kind of thing...
Thanx again!

if you don't have the empty/full picked out then go here and pick a set.

unzip and save them where you can find them

right click desktop > properties
desktop tab > customize desktop
click once on 'full' bin > then 'change icon' > then 'browse' and find your icons
repeat for empty
This does not work since IconX always crashes when using ico-files (at the moment a have pngs) and xp unfortunately doesn't seem to accept pngs...
right click desktop > properties

not IconX properties - regular properties
I followed my own instructions prior to posting reply to make sure it worked 1st

(but you do want to right click the recycle and choose iconx properties and tell it to use default not external)
That's exactly what I did and IconX instantly chrashed. After returning the icons to the standard ones IconX worked again.
try:
set Iconx to use default icons (not external image)
unload IconX
change recycle via instructions above
reload IconX
I just switched a couple on my desktop using right click on folder - iconx properties - external - browse = .ico

iconx shouldn't crash using icons (never has on me) since when it's set to use the default, it's using icons - it also changes using IconPackager which uses icons

Unfortunately it always chrashes on my PC when using .ico instead of .png
