My preference when playing this game is to randomise everything, it makes things far more interesting and it ensures I don't start developing "winning" settings. The problem is that the size of the galaxy is, in a way, linked to two other settings in an important way, but random doesn't take this into account.
If you randomise civs and galaxy size, you can end up with a Gigantic galaxy with only one other civ. Chances are I'm going to win a tech victory before we ever meet. With a tiny map and nine civs I just find it too crowded to be fun. I'd like there to be an additional Random Linked to Size setting, where say a gigantic map would garner 7-9 civs, while huge would be 5-8 etc.
Same with tech rate. Very Fast on gigantic is just too fast. A civ in the other corner has no chance of affecting your development, and it means that a tech victory beckons simply because, on gigantic, the space between you and other civs just makes it so easy. While you might want Very Fast, I'd like a Random Linked to Size option, which keeps tech rates at something appropriate for the size of the map, so a Gigantic could be Very Slow - Normal, while Tiny could be Normal - Very Fast, etc.
It would allow me to use random, but in a way that results in fun games every time, instead of some games where I get settings too ridiculous to play (like gigantic, 2 civs, Very Fast tech)
