I put in a bug report on this. I also posted it in the Design your own ship thread, but it got quickly buried among all the wonderful designs. Go look at all of them if you haven't! I thought this deserved a second look and maybe a bit of explanation. Plus, it's worth a couple giggles.
I am playing with making a ship seem to fly around within a hex. I have some odd little tricks I have found with the animation and they sometimes have unexpected results. Usually messy looking ones. I also use an absolute minimum of parts. In this one, there is a Terran part that reminds me of a very tiny shuttlecraft. Applying my tricks made it fly around in loops in the ship designer. It took a while to make the loops look visually interesting and convincing. It ends up looking like a very skilled stunt pilot showing off.
However, when I take the design out of the designer and let it become an actual ship on the map, something marvelous and silly happens. The ship is freed from its hex and flies about the map!
I would paste a screenshot, but its just a little ship in a hex that way. So here's a link to a video.
Terran Shuttle Pilot
I will let people guess just what makes a ship fly like this. I suspect the devs will find a way to put an end to it. The response to my support ticket called it "Plastic Bag Drive". I love the reference and description.
I have something sillier planned. I just don't know what it is, yet.
