This game is said to be highly moddable as a main feature. So I recently started my first steps as a modder, for the first time in my life.
My intention is to make small changes, in aspects that I think I could taylor to my tastes, instead of getting tired of posting once and again asking the developers this or that, or trying to find if the community shares the same tastes to make some pressing to them, or somebody that just made exactly what I wanted.
Things like roadbuilding/instaroads, city snaking or what should provide the Adventurer's Guild, are usually trending topics. But it will be very difficult that all the people agree in the exact same things. I did a poll about them, and what it seems is that, "well, if it is not very game-breaking, I can get used to it".
And what about modding? Oh, that's for modders, not for me. Why? Because anyone new to the Modding world can get scared when looking at the modding forums. When you see somehitng like "Tutorials" or "How to get started", first thing you see are long lists of xml and things like that, and the normal user, that only wants that the Adventurer's Guild gives 2 xp/turn, will fly away.
For that main reason, I post this in general, instead of in the Mods forum. Because I want the people to know:
- Modding in a small scale can be made even for someone with no knowledge. But currently, it will take some efforts and help from experience people. Small changes in numbers, even creating a new unit (my lovely roadbuilder) can be easier that what we think.
- Sharing the results will provide in a wider range of ideas and mods. Other people might take your ideas and redo it...the world of FE will get more rich growing with small parts that many people add, like a snowball.
BUT, for this to go on, I find very necessary some kind of "Guide for newbies", or even better, some kind of Wiki for Modding, maybe something that can be filled with the people, and where each entry adresses to a forum post for further discussion.
I wanted to start a guide with basic concepts, to explain how I did my little roadbuilder, but I'm afraid I have not knowledge enough even to explain what is XML, further than what the wikipedia says.
So I encourage the people here to try about it, and the experienced modders, to think that with a guide or a wiki, maybe you will not need to answer so many simple questions. I wished that the developers could provide some orientations too, in what is possible and what not, with the basic modding. For example, I wanted that my roadbuilder took 5 gildar for each piece of road, but it seems that roadbuilding is harcoded...
Well, I hope that this contributes in giving some more help to the people that are wishing to start with these small changes, but do not dare yet.
