Any way to have more ships on screen without lag?

Hi, what I want to know is if decreasing any video options would efficiently allow more ships on screen without lag. I have a good card (or better than avarage) hd4850 and tough It handle the maximum graphics very well I changed them all to medium in an attempt to achieve that. But I don't felt any change. Is it just related to ram? Does it helps even putting it all down to low? Any other option to help with it? Thanks.

Just how many ships are you talking about?

I have a HD 4670 card and it handles just about everything the game tosses at it and I have everything turned up to the max. VERY rarely do I ever get any significant/noticable lag

Reducing/Trimming your Empire Tree to the bare bones will give you the best bang for your tweak, IMHO. The less the CPU has to track via the Empire Tree and then draw for you the better it will run. Also deselecting Show Trade Ship Icons will help alot end game where there are 100's of those bad boys flying around.

Really, very little you do is gonna change any lag you get.

It's not your graphics card that will be the problem, you will need a very powerful CPU to process all those ships doing their thing.

I've screwed with this alot because I like playing huge maps against AI and I know it can be a pain in the ass later in game where you see GPU utilization at 20 percent and you are getting 25-30 FPS. All I can say is it's CPU bottlenecking. Make sure your northbridge is working with the RAM not against. On stock clocks i can play a huge multi random game against all ai, then the FPS shat the bed about 4 hours in. (20-25.) Bumping the northbridge from 2000 to 2400, reseting mem timings to 6clk and kicking the cpu up from 3.4g to 4.1g picks up about 100 percent improvement to playable FPS 45-55. It still has one core running at 100 percent but the performance is better. I suppose it you could get a dual core up to stable 4.8g-5.0g you could play most anything at 60+ fps but that's ridiculous.

I've got an i7 920 overclocked to 4 Ghz, and a GTX 260, and I'm still getting a bit of lag later in the game. So I dunno.

End of Beric01's quote

I've been wondering how the i7's would handle that. I have a AMD PHII 965 c3 that normally I run at 3.6 but can handle up to 4.1 before it gets "funny". What's your mem and nb settings?
