I really love the game, the camera interface is excellent. However there are a few things which I feel are missing when playing. Generally when I come across a Really Good Game™ I want all the cool features I've seen in other games to play with. I'm sure lots of stuff has been gone over before but I'm just gonna rant about everything I think is actually important here so I can stop thinking about it lol.
Fleets!I can name planets and ships, which is great, but I can't name fleets? Why not? Fleets can be fiddly with me having to reform them a lot after being reinforced for example. Some ships just don't auto join, the unexpanded fleet representation (lots of little squares) don't update with the newly added ships and when you reform a fleet it puts it to the bottom of the stack. This isn't ideal.
What I would like to see with fleets:The ability to name the fleet (which would appear in the info card and on the empire bar like a planet name).
Pressing some key combination (like Control + Shift) and clicking on a ship selects the sub-selection so I don't have to mess about with the tab key.
When reforming a existing fleet with the same 'flagship' then don't move the fleet to the bottom of the stack in the empire bar.
When ships join, update the little squares with the new ships.
More difference in fleet icons? Like Roman numerals or separate icons in the middle to visually differentiate them. That would be cool.
Toggle option to put the fleet icon above the planet the prime/flagship is in when you have zoomed out far enough to have it disappear on the ship it self.
This one is a bit out there but rather than relying on 'auto join' and 'create fleet' it would be cool to drag a ship onto the fleet icon which adds the selection of ships to the fleet.
I usually take time to capture planets in 'contested' (i.e. pre-owned) areas, speed is not an issue so I feel like I need some kind of ability which takes longer to work but gives me the ability to actually capture a planet rather than bomb the planet into a version of hell and then colonise the charred, green glowing, radioactive remains. Basically I want to capture the infrastructure already built - preferably with another frigate type to facilitate it (carries soldiers etc).
Also the obvious stuff like Subterfuge and covert operations, diplomacy, sensor buildings to 'scan' nearby planets, missile silos (like Fragile Allegiance) etc.
On a more aesthetic note, I don't understand why capitol ships, at least, don't have animated turrets - I LOVE turrets.
Another note about aesthetics really but the charge up and down of Freespace 2 beam cannons really adds a lot to the feel to the game. And considering I spend most of my time with the camera right next to my capitols, its kind of disappointing to see instant beams in Sins. I tried modding this but could only get the charge up/down effect with an ability (I couldn't find a way to make a primary weapon use a buff either).
Anyway... looking forward to expansion.
