It's not a bug. Once ships are done doing what they were ordered to do, they move back to their point of origin. Since you jumped into the gravity well, once they're done attacking or whatever, they move back to where they jumped in.

That said, if you form a fleet and send some units that belong to the fleet to another gravity well to do stuff, once they're done there they will actually jump back and regroup with the fleet on their own.

Yeah, I have that happen regularly with my fleets. It's not a matter of splitting them up they just seem to randomly get 'stuck' on the edge of the gravity well while the rest of the fleet is all nicely formed up where they belong. It's almost like their position in the formation is messed up. So far the only way I've been able to 'correct' it is to remove that ship from the fleet and then have them re-join, no amount of cancelling orders or moving the rest of the fleet around seems to help.

That's right about the point of origin, they seem to want to go back to the rally point. Maybe it's bug of ships auto-joining fleets before they get a chance to hit the rally point?

I'm just a bit confused as to your description:

For example, I just started bombarding a nearby planet. I sent in 2 fleets and once they were there I issued them orders to attack. I went off to do something else for a minute, came back and noticed one smaller ship at the edge of the gravity well

So you jumped some ships in, with all of them selected you showed to attack a planet, then switched your view to something else?

Because only siege frigates and capitals can attack planets, the way I picture it is you had a mix of ships, so the ones that could attack went to do it, and the ones that couldn't just stayed where they were.

Is this the case?

Which begs the obvious question that I have to ask -

Did you create the fleet with ctrl+# or tactical manager > create fleet?

See, I'm having an issue that is none of the above, but similar. (I found this thread by searching for my bug.)

I've played three games in a row where this happened (2 betas, and then the release version last night.) I'll have one planet in a given game where I'll jump in system, and nothing I do will keep the ships there. If I leave them unattended, they start drifting to the next planet. I don't mean "edge of the gravity well reset" drift...I mean, full-on, down the jump lane towards a planet drift.

I've never let a group drift all the way to the next planet to see if they do, because I'm too busy herding cats to get them where I want them. In each case, it was only one planet where this would happen - and it would happen every time I jumped a fleet in to that system.

I will try to get a screen cap next time it occurs.

I have situations where one of my ships in my fleet will literally jump into another systems, while the rest will continue to fight and form up. I've had many moments with a solo ship, "Forming Up" and just hugging the outskirts of the gravity well. Even when I move the fleet, it will wander off and do it's own thing. I'll screen shot it if it happens again, but it's an off and on type of thing. One game, I'll have it. The next game, they'll act normal again.

I've seen something like this too. I would tell my ships to move to another planet, and even though its a neighbor planet and they are connected and the fleet is near the jump point, they move across the map, and take the long way around.

Basically I have my ships at Point A. I move them to Point B. My ships take the CD route instead of straight to B. Sometimes through the enemy, and their planets.
