Hello all!
We are all excited about the return of the Star Control franchise, that goes without saying. However, these days it seems like there are inevitable cross-media tie-ins as either part of the build-up to release, or expand the post-release universe. Personally, I think this is a great idea; and have a few ideas along these lines. Granted, a few are a bit far-fetched, but would be fantastic to see brought to fruition.
Book(s): The sole Star Control novel (Star Control: Interbellum, ISBN-10: 0761501967, from 1996) was a bit...odd. In all honestly, it seemed that the author had a pre-existing story that he wanted to tell, and was paid to name-drop items from the Star Control universe to make it fit. We've seen this before, and since; and it will likely continue so long as there are IP's with literary license to sell. If a novel series were generated, I would like to see the IP given its due, done by an established SciFi writer. Since the House Of Mouse decided to let the Rat King wave its magic wand and make 30 years of an Expanded Universe disappear, perhaps Timothy Zahn has some free time?
Comics: Yes, I am sore that BioWare ripped off large sections of Star Control 2 for its story, and rebranded it as Mass Effect. However, the Mass Effect comic series was beautifully rendered, and did a fantastic job of filling in the backstory to "what happened between games 1 & 2. It was obviously a labor of love, and it showed.
Toys: Considering where the minds behind Star Control 2 work these days, and the (unofficial) outreach to pick their brains & obtain their blessing for the Star Control reboot, I'm sure there could be negotiations over a toy line. Perhaps one where toy "ships" could be placed on some kind of "dock", and these toys could be part of a "game" involving...I don't know...some form of ship-to-ship combat perhaps? Just spitballing here.
Direct-To-Netflix/Internet Series: Ok, yes, I realize this is unlikely in the extreme. However, there hasn't been good space-based science fiction since Battlestar went off the air. There is a market for this; and with all the other space-adventure IP's tied up in legal mumbo-jumbo or being used to justify keeping the animation group employed, it would be able to corner the market for a given period of time. Again, the outreach to the godfathers could be put to good use, and perhaps a deal made, since rumor has it their employer is looking to start its own Film/TV studio.
Ideas, thoughts, idle musings, furious rants?
