Quoting admiralWillyWilber,
Honestly I can't see how the customization of Galactic civilizations would be able to work on a first person shooter except the ship. They don't have the ground like you would need harder if customized. None of the abilities, personalities, parties, or mega events. Lets not forget anomoly and planetary artifact abilities wouldn't apply. If taken out there wouldn't be much customization. If applied wouldn't affect you. This is just the start of the rewrite that has none thing to do with the game endgame. The scale is probably to large. At least the campaigns give you an idea of story though it would have to be broken up into many parts, and of course you would have a lot smaller parts. They would have to write this game from scratch.
The tech research would be to big to be significant unless you had a scientists option. Who for the most part would be trying to get grants instead of other departments. Not all his tech ideas would go through, and most likely he would be stuck into one tree unless the government canceled his contracts. A ship designer could also be there where his design would compete against other designs between how good it was, price, and application to mission. Freighters, colonists, military, explorer.
This game would be more like Galaxies or Freelancer. If I would have to guess if you wan't customization modifying a role playing game would at least have more applicable customizing. Or here is a novelty Stardock buy Freelancer bring it back and make it more like Galactic civilizations with a new engine for 64 bit.
The problem isn't the ideas it is you are trying to take a game and give it roles it is not applicable for. The morale is very little of this is applicable for first person shooter. I think the first person shooter games that were designed for first person shooter games would be better.
Obviously I haven't communicated very well. I'm talking about a spin-off game that focuses on multi-player tournament like Counterstrike.
You can't see how different races could have special and interesting features in that setting? Here are some more ideas.
Human: Heat seeking missile.
Thraddash: "Nuclear" rocket launcher.
ARilou: teleportation ability.
Druuge: Awesome sniper rifle but it makes you take a little damage when you shoot it.
Pkunk: Very fast speed, but low health and short range gun.
Black Ur Quan: Spinning hovering blades that move relatively slowly but do lots of damage.
Green Ur Quan: Shotgun and "mosquito" drones that cause damage.
Shofixti: Pistol and dynamite vest.
I think people here are suffering from "Don't mess with my game!" syndrome. Listen folks, there will always be Star Control 2. I'm not suggesting messing with canon or introducing 3-legged cow precursors. I'm just talking about having fun with an idea.
