My new computer--game runs faster on a better rig.

This game definitely runs much better on a faster rig.  I upgraded from a dual core Opteron 185 overclocked to 2.8 GHz and with 3 GB RAM and an 8800 GT to this rig.  I think I got a nice deal for $600, essentially brand new.

Core i5-3570K (quad core, Ivy Bridge, unlocked, OC to 4.2 GHz, can easily do 4.5 GHz)
Corsair H60 Water Cooler HSF
8 GB generic RAM from a Dell (2x2x2x2)
ASUS P8Z68-V LX mobo
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 2GB DDR5 (special model for Best Buy)
128 GB Kingston HyperX SSD
Windows 8 Pro
Antec BP550 Plus modular power supply
Antec 300 case (only has the rear and top fans)
DVD-RW drive

I have 0 gfx lag no matter how many ships is on the map with my PC.

PS : Do not play late game with zil as he will lag the game till unplayable with his 286....his CPU hits 100 very easily and if there's a 100000 scale...i'm sure he will hit that too. No offense but just stating facts.

A coworker who is a computer enthusiast built it by purchasing deals over time, but he didn't have any use for it.

DS that is very similar to the build I have. CPU speed makes a difference. Welcome to 2013

Actually gfx card is the key factor in whether the game gfx lags late game. CPU speed only helps loading time mainly unless its too low. And for games like sins , it only uses single core so dual or quad core won't matter at all.

My 680 vehemently disagrees with you, it still chugs eventually no matter how low the graphics settings are.  His old 2.8ghz opteron cores were less than half the power of his new ones.  It may not matter that there are more of them, but the speed sure as hell does.

 

His graphics card is major overkill for sins.  I know because I had a flawed 560 SOC from gigabyte that needed to be underclocked to avoid a driver failure under load.  Sins never came anywhere near working it or I'd have crashed continuously running four matches at a time.

Actually, multicore CPUs - even newer ones - should result in greater performance regardless.  The OS will use the other cores to do background tasks, freeing up the one core the game needs. Additionally, newer CPUs have faster, more efficient cores in general, so you should get a bit of a performance boost from them.

Something is obviously wrong with your system if your 680 can't run the game properly late game.

I have i5-2500K and a 6970 with 8gb ram. It runs with 0 gfx lag no matter how many ships are in the system. I know because I played against 9 vicious AI sometimes and they max out their ships within an hour.

Oh and having a SSD is huge.

Where were you to say all this detailed yet crucial information? Why is the people who have something to say don't say anything and the people who have nothing to say just troll the forums? (Yes accuse me all you want but its true)

 

Yes Yarlen-just tell us the truth that we shouldn't buy AMD CPUs? They wont sue you.

It isn't just a matter of "how many ships" there are....your zoom level also greatly affects performance....

AI's also don't corvette spam or bomber spam...

Regardless I have an almost identicle setup (Hybrid drive, not full SSD) with a 560Ti 1gb card, same processor etc, and I have nearly zero issues. 20+ hour games on normal settings (1x speed), max graphics, huge map, full AI ...

*shrugs* My individual cpu speed for each core is 3.3ghz.
