Uh...you are wrong. This is a problem with completely new games as well. I have already had several battles freeze up on me where I wasn't allowed to move any of my units and had to auto-resolve.
Also, the game's overall performance has gotten a lot worse. I get up to 30 second lags while playing on the overworld map, every couple minutes. The game is almost unbearable while playing on anything greater than 1024x768 resolution and 0 anti-aliasing.
I'm sorry to say that the game was more fun at 1.08 than it is now. At least back then I could play, period.
Sorry to hear that, man. Have you sent them your debug.err file? Also, if you crashed at all, you should send in your dump file. I've been doing that since beta, and the next version that comes out has always worked better for me (with the exception of the first 1.1 beta, can't blame them too much with the multi-threaded AI and all). It still needs improvement, no doubt, but it's running a lot better for me now. I run at 1368x768 (I really hate widescreens, but they're cheap).
As for these tactical battles, I've NEVER had to auto-resolve. I HAVE had to hit the next turn button. Sometimes you have to cycle through your units, and make sure they're not targeted to move to another tile (with no actions left). Do so by right clicking on that unit to reset the movement path. With those two things, you shouldn't get "stuck". If you do, send in your debug.err, and probably the save file too, so they can try to replicate, and fix it.
Hope this helps.
