No LAN for Starcraft 2

Well, this is very disapointing.

We got quite different answers about local area networking (LAN), where both Dustin or Sigaty said they were still discussing it, however, Pardo knew immediately: "we don't have any plans to support LAN," he said and clarified "we will not support it." The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net.

On the plus side:

When Browder was asked if famous characters like Nova (from the cancelled StarCraft: Ghost) or Michael Liberty (character from a StarCraft novel) will turn up in single player, he said "there is a chance" with a massive grin. "There is definitely a chance, we'll see."

Well that about kills the chance that i'll get it. is the online multiplayer at least free?

They've already doomed all of the poor children in Korea. No LAN = No tournaments.

who designs a game these days and DOESN'T include LAN play? I hope Diablo 3 has LAN play

at the expense of quite a few potential buyers? not a good way to continue a good game series

considering some of us use LAN to get the internet (my internet service requires it) it seems kinda stupid

My thoughts exactly; this is a huge disappointment, and nothing short of a slap in the face to many of their fans.

 

I guess it's a good way to discourage piracy.

Quite the opposite.  Now the only way to play LAN without buying multiple copies is to pirate or get third party hacks.

If this is true, then it shows just how disconnected Blizzard has become from it's fans. Starcraft is a massive, massive game at LANs and for the sequel to not include LAN support of any kind is going to cost them dearly. If this is suppost to encourage online play and prevent piracy, it'll have the direct opposite - rampent piracy, LAN hacks and gameplay over hamachi will be the way this game gets played.

Epic fail. I expect Blizzards offices to be the targets of riots in Korea now, especially as I predict its single player will not live up to more modern RTS games.

How stupid is that. If i want to play with some friends we HAVE to be in different houses now?? Kind of anti-socalisation

I bet some clever hackers will solve this "problem" pretty soon. So there is hope.

Well, count me as yet another customer that was getting this for sure, and now will not.  Lan play is the main reason I/we'd were going to get it in the first place.  If Diablo 3 does not have Lan, about 9 of my friends will never get their jaws off the floor.

I personally don't mind. They said that battle.net 2 will be full of good features, anti-hacks and faster connection speeds.

If they don't have to worry about lan they can make sure B.Net2 is better.

I think it's too early to judge since we know so little about their plans for the new Battle.net. Basically what this means is no offline LAN. Which means Blizzard requires people to log on to Battle.net for multiplayer be it on a LAN or with people in the lobby.

 

It is possible they might use a similar virtual LAN type setup for Battle.net(and online lobby of course).

Technically it doesn't really matter if you play on your LAN via direct LAN connection or via Battle.net

Yes, battle.net is a free service. You just have to create a battle.net account.

 

http://us.battle.net/?rhtml=y creating an account on this site, instead of ingame when you log on to multiplayer will allow you to have a single account for all blizzard games.

How so? Battle.net doesn't let you on without a valid cd key. If there's no LAN support in the game at all, there's no magical pirate switch to enable LAN.

This is almost certainly aimed at piracy, since no LAN = no Hamachi pirate networks either. Starcraft had a battle.net server emulator years ago, but that got shut down by Blizzard legal.
