To all the New Players Concerning Mega Events

or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mega Events

Many players, both young and old, have complained lately about the Mega events, and their unbalancing or "game killing" effect.

When the idea for them first came out, the Devs asked us (the players) if we would want these events to be there to totally unbalance the game. The vast majority said yes, but out of consideration for those who might not like them, we asked that they be optional. The Devs listened. The discussion can be found here

So after many of us discussed, debated and accepted the idea, to have people come in and start complaining about it is somewhat annoying, especially when lesser random events happen regardless of if it is turned on or off. Further, since this is a feature that most of us were in favor of because of its unbalancing effect, we don't want to see them nerfed because new players don't yet understand the game and its history.

We asked for it, we got it, and we don't want to give it up. If all the devs read are people complaining about it, then they might change it. So, we want to make sure that what we asked for remains intact. So, we have been somewhat brutal in our responses to those who are knocking it. Imagine you got a nice cute puppy for Christmas, then someone came up and started kicking it, you would be upset as well.

Of particular note lately has been the issue of the Pirate event. If you will note in the Journal about events, Draginol specifically mentioned this event in the initial suggestion. It was something we knew about, and in order for it to be truly game changing, it MUST be overpowered.

I hope that this doesn't sour you completely to the game. Understand that when we were promised this, many of us had been playing for eight months or more, and were ready for something new. I hope that as you get more game time in that you will either grow to appreciate them, or simply play without them.

After growing weary of silly posts, such as this one, by well meaning players who do not seem to grasp the purpose and intention of Mega Events, I am bumping this thread.

To those unfamiliar with it, I encourage you to read the OP. You don't have to agree with it, but it should explain why few care about complaints concerning Mega Events being "over powered".

Please remember, Mega events were not created to be speed bumps. Rather, they were intended to be cliff faces, where you had to change directions and go around. Sometimes this change is helpful, sometimes harmful, but regardless of which the change was intended.

Maybe this thread should be stickied. Also, as has been suggested by numerous other people in this thread, a solution might be to simply make a small pop-up warning people that the events are severely overpowered, that way no one could come up with reasonable complaints.

I also hope the dread lords gets a boost before the game launches, they've always been an extreme dissapointment to me, considering the power the game lore claims they have...

Indeed, what I would like to see would be a ready made planet and several ship for them upon arrival.

Yep, the mantra is easy actually:

Mega Events are meant to be overpowered.
Mega Events are meant to be overpowered.
Mega Events are meant to be overpowered.

They are meant to scare the sh*t out of you and make you struggle for at least one game year, possibly more. Once you understand this, you'll notice that several of them are too easy to overcome actually. ;)

That said, I agree that a warning popup wouldn't hurt, and maybe deactivate them by default (unless they are already - not sure).

Jesus! Why can people just think in black and white!?

Several of those events are defined by plain percentage numbers (Take over X % of planets...). Add a slider to adjust how 'unbalanced' they are and the whole player base gets some extra fun and not just 0,00001% of it, which are represented by the pro gamers.

There are difficulty levels between 'Easy' and 'Brutal'. Ever wondered why such difficulty levels like medium and average were introduced?!

Some players just like some more events. The game was always lacking some action, and the events are really needed to get some entertainment from time to time. The casual events like 'Found artifact on planet...' are hardly enough to keep your eyes open.
But an event like Dread Lords is real fun. Restricting it to a minority of players by making it completely unbalanced is just plain stupid.

I've been playing GCV 1 and 2 for a long time. I'm not very good at these kinds of games but I do love them. My first being MOO 2. But I have to say I'm glad the devs have given us the option to turn off the mega events. I kind of wish that there would be a way to edit them, maybe tone them down a bit. I was just playing a new game and was doing well then BAM! Pirates took over half of my planets and a lot of my special buildings (tech caps and so on) and for me that kind of ruined the game. Taking that much is just a bit too much for me, but if I was able to tone them down a bit so I could at least have a chance to take them back that would be sweet. Anyway, not all long time players see this as a good thing, at least the way it is now, I'd like to be able to adjust how harsh the mega events are.

Can I ask a question to the people that are for this? What makes this appealing to you? Is the game not challenging enough without these mega events taking a big chunk of your planets?

Variety is the spice of life, it changes things up, makes things more dynamic. To me it's not really about the difficulty, it's about the sudden monkey wrench in the machinery that has turned the situation on it's head, forcing me to rethink how I'm going about things.

Because of this, Jagged Knife, Pirates, and Peace Makers are some of my favorites.
