Do you have Administrative access on the account you are installing from?

Has WB5 been installed on another account on that computer?

I installed it on my old account...it went perfectly...then I uninstalled the program and made a new computer account(the old account has been removed)...then I tried to install the program again on the new account and that when I got the error message at the end of the installation...confidently the installation did not finish yet...

NOTE: Both of the account are computer administrators:D ...             What do you mean by "have administrator access?

What do you mean by "have administrator access?

Meaning = Administrative permissions to install programs, etc. - which it sounds like you do.

I would say you have some registry keys with the old account information in them creating the problem (perhaps connected with the activation).

Your best bet may be to install version 4.x, and then try to do a System Restore to a point before you installed WB5 > then reinstall WB5 onto that account.

I do not work for Stardock, so I do not know what keys need to be adjusted, or what files you would need to work with to manage any issues that have been created by registry keys in the old account.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge will happen by with a better suggestion.

Thanks for your suggestion...I don't know why, I can't restore my computer to a restore point...I have tried all the restore points but after restoring, it says that the process failed and no changes have been made...but that is not the main problem...the main problem is windowblinds 5...

Can somebody please help me? I'm very desperate on searching the ways to correct it...Please help me!!!!!

I have tried to install it using all accounts in my computer and still can't install it properly...

Already submit a ticket to stardock but the staff did not reply it...I submitted the ticket about 3 days ago...it says that they will reply it in 48 hours...

Please help me...I really love wb5...I don't want to regret for purchasing the product...

The error message pop up at almost the end of the installation...

"You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun the installation from an administrators account."

I have tried all my accounts but still did not work...

I still suspect it has to do with a key in the registry based on your old account.

You could try to remove all "WindowBlinds" keys from the registry, and attempt an installation.

- or -

You could try to run in safe mode w/networking logging into the administrators account (assuming you are using SDC) and attempt to install the program. If not using SDC, then try to run the executible.

I am not sure if this will work, as Safe Mode has some restrictions and may prevent using the installers, but it may work.

To get to Safe Mode, restart the computer and hit the "F8" key until you see the boot options screen with Safe Mode options > use arrow keys to highlight the Safe Mode you want > hit "Enter" > continue until you logon > attempt to install the program.

That's about all I have to offer based on limited knowledge of the registry keys created, and what - if any - issues the removing of the old account may have created.

How can I easily find and delete all the wb5 registry keys?

Do I have to search it manually?

How can I easily find and delete all the wb5 registry keys?

It is a bit of a procedure, and if you have not worked in the registry before, I would not necessarily suggest doing it.

If you want to give it a go, you would first go to:

Start > Run > type: regedit > click "OK"

You will see a two pane Window, with Keys (folders) in the left pane, and data information in the right pane.

The first thing you want to do, is click on each of the 'HKEY...' listings in the left pane, with one highlighted at a time: go to File > Export > save as a *.reg file with a descriptive name (I use the "KEYNAME_old" format) > save to say "My Documents"

Once this is done, you would highlight the "My Computer" entry at the top of the left pane > Edit > Find > enter "WindowBlinds" - without quotation marks > click "Find Next".

When an entry is found, you will see an open key (folder) in the left pane, and the name WindowBlinds in either the left pane item, or in the right pane as either a "Name" or as "Data".

Note - to be safe, if the word WindowBlinds is in the "Data" column in the right pane, and not in the key name in the left pane - you should only delete the data field by double-clicking the "Name" item (which will open a dialog with the Value Data field highlighted which includes the WindowBlinds listing. You would clear the Value Data text field by hitting "Delete". This will keep you relatively safe.

Any key (folder) in the left pane bearing the name "WindowBlinds, wbload.exe, wbload.document" can be deleted safely - assuming you do not have any version of the WindowBlinds program installed.

You can continue the "Find" command by hitting "F3" after each entry has been found, until you receive the message "Finished searching through the registry".

Item #1 - you can replace one of the exported ".reg" files by double-clicking it, although I have seen this fail in some instances - so beware that the registry is a place you want to make changes carefully after verifying that you clearly see what you are deleting or changing. This would be used as a backup if things go sideways if you make a mistake in the registry.

Item #2 - I strongly recommend only deleting the following:

Left pane keys (folders) bearing the name:

- wbload.exe

- wbload.document

- WindowBlinds

- WBSrv

Right pane:

Delete any "Data" field that contains the word WindowBlinds, by double-clicking the "Name" to invoke the Value dialog (in most cases the name will be "default") - and then delete the text field entry containing the word "WindowBlinds".

If you follow the advice in "Item #2 for both panes, you should be safe in the registry for the procedure of removing WB keys.

Note - this may not be all the WB keys, since I am not aquainted with all the files written by the program and it's installer.

I have tried all the steps mentioned...but still did not work...

I think I going to give up this "wb5" thing...

Thanks for your help anyway...you are the only one who replied...

Thanks again.

Okay,

The only other thing you could try is the following:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name the new value Administrator
Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as its Value data
Close the registry editor

Note - the "Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList" - means to highlight the UserList key (folder) in the left pane.

This procedure will add the original Administator account to the Welcome screen, which was created during Windows XP installation, and is automatically hidden when you create an account with administative rights.

Rebooting the computer will bring you back to the Welcome screen, which should offer the Administator account, which may give you a shot at installing the program. Note - you will need to remember the password for this account.

If this fails, and you want to hide the Administator account again, just delete the new D-Word you made in the above mentioned key.

You may need to give permission to your other account to run WindowBlinds if successful.

See Developer GreenReaper's comments #20 and #39 here for some info on allowing access for multiple accounts https://www.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?AID=93859&p=1&c=1

If you do not get it installed tonight, then I am sure Tech Support will contact you next week - they are probably swamped due to the new release, and they do not work on the weekends.

Good luck, and anything I can do to help.

Already install wb5 using administrator and guess what...I still got the error message...

"You may need to give permission to your other account to run WindowBlinds if successful."

What did you mean by that?

"You may need to give permission to your other account to run WindowBlinds if successful."

What did you mean by that?

When you install WB, you install it on one account (usually the primary account that has administrative rights).

If you have multiple accounts, you need to give the other accounts access permission to the "C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\WindowBlinds" folder.

You do this by first going to "My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab" - deselect the "Use simple file sharing" option (last in the list), and then click "Apply".

Now go to the C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\WindowBlinds" folder > right-click the folder > Properties > Security tab > place a check mark in at least "Read & Execute, and Read" options in all accounts you want to allow WB to skin on (Note - the easiest thing to do is just select "Full Control" for these accounts) > click "Apply".

Now the other accounts can use WB to skin the GUI.

Note - if you are running XP Home version, and you cannot gain access to the Security tab after deselecting "Use simple file sharing" - you will need to boot to Safe Mode to gain access.

Finally got it! FOr anyone else who may have the same problem, here is the fix.

In the Windoblinds folder is a userpermissions text.

Open a command line (Start>run>type cmd) change to your Windowblinds directory (cd C:\program files\stardock\object desktop\windowblinds) and type in the userpermissions text: CACLS.EXE . /E /T /G USERS:F

This will run the batch file that give users in limited accounts access to install and change WB skins.

The kids think I'm cool again......should last for about 10 minutes

I haven't had a chance or reason to try it yet, do you know if it works on WB5?

Bichur,

I do not know if tjesterb's batch file will work on WB5, but the instructions I indicated in #13 are from GreenReaper - who codes for Stardock.

yes, I know of GreenReaper - just looking for a shorcut, just in case
