I was able to with a Defender and a Warrior in 0.87 last night iirc... hmmm.
It work's fine for me.
I suspect that's a game you started with 0.85. In order to maintain backward compatibility the game save stores all the xml, so when we fix issues with xml your game started with prior versions won't get the fixes.
I thought I was playing .87, but I was still playing .85.
