It is a time of Rebellion. Stardock announced today the release of the most significant expansion to Ironclad Games’ hit RTS, Sins of a Solar Empire.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is a stand-alone expansion that does not require players to own a previous edition of Sins of a Solar Empire. It extends the ground-breaking gameplay that has made it one of the most popular PC strategy games of all time.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion combines the best elements of real-time strategy with the depth normally reserved for 4X games. Players take command of a space-faring civilization that is fighting for its very existence in a vast interstellar war. This conflict will see players colonize planets, battle pirates, research new technologies, conduct trade, use diplomacy and engage in epic battles with massive fleets.

"What I think has made Sins of a Solar Empire such a phenomenon is that it demonstrated that you can have a real-time strategy game that rewards victory to the player who has built the better civilization, rather than the player with the best reflexes," said Brad Wardell, President & CEO of Stardock Entertainment.

In Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, years of unending conflict have resulted in internal strife within the three warring races – the Trader Emergency Coalition, the Vasari Empire and the Advent Unity. As a result, players can choose to play as a loyalist or rebel faction of the three races, each with their own techs and ships.

In addition to warring factions, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion also includes new "Titan" class warships. These massive vessels are fleets unto themselves and can unleash destruction across an entire star system. When matched with the additional new corvettes and capital ships, they create a variety of interesting tactical options for players.

"Each faction gets their own Titan," said Wardell. "Seeing one of these behemoths enter a system can be pretty awe-inspiring. It's a real game changer in the middle of a big multiplayer battle when someone manages to get their Titan into the fray."

The underlying game engine has also been overhauled to deliver state of the art graphics resulting in breathtaking visuals.

"The combination of being a space-based game with massive scale and the new graphics engine really helps bring home just how epic these battles can be," said Wardell. When you see the already massive Kol battleship being overshadowed, literally, by a Titan, it conveys a level of scale that you just can't get in a non-space game."

System Requirements:

  • Requires: Windows® 8 / 7 SP1 / Vista™ SP2

My Steam copy still says beta 0.96.4047.  Is there going to be an update that will bring it to the release version?  I don't want to start a game and have to save it and come back to the save not being supported because the client got updated.

Theres nothing wrong with steam, ironclad just need to get their act together and update it. Why they werent ready to update it on official release is a bit beyond me. It's not like they havent had the time, they certainly had time to release this article before the game update .... Then again I might just be getting irrate because I want to get into rebellion properly now!

It wouldn't be a game release without unexpected 'treasures' being found, gang. Fear not, we'll get it sorted with Valve and then the galactic annihilation shall commence.

You need to have it running while Rebellion is open, yes. If it's not running when you start Rebellion, they'll both start up at the same time.

Has anyone actually won a game by building a better civilization instead of having better reflexes in this game?

yeah. Honestly its much less reflexes than it is start up speed. You need to claim resources aggressively for the grind. There is an optimal balance between force building and expansion that needs to be discovered by each player. Reflexes are less necessary, the autocast AI for abilities isn't stellar but it works; you can focus on macro scale in large battles. Economy and its application, not APM, will win the game.

Edit: While not up at the time of this writing, I saw in another post that Yarlen will post patch notes.  coolz.

Thank you.  I'm not sure about it, then.  It sounds like it might be what I'm looking for, but I don't know.  I'm just not that good at 4x or ANY RTS games, really.

Jythier: Neither am I, but Sins is the only RTS game I can actually win. Trust me, the way it mixes TBS and RTS play makes all the difference. Grab it, you'll like it.
