I tried to have one of my champions use the +1 defense book whilst engaged in the tactical battle screen.
From the debug file it seems as if the game tried to display a popup but couldn't and consequently crashed.

If there was a dump zip created in C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic on Windows XP), please post that too.
I just had the same problem. I tried to use the potion that gives you more experience during tactical combat and the game crashed.
