I was just wondering what the multiplayer population on this game is like, by which I mean, am I going to have to wait and hour for a game or is it relativley easy to find one.

I've never seen the lobby empty. It takes me between 30 seconds and 10 minutes to get a game going. As a new player you might find it a little more difficult unless you host your own games. Other people will have different experiences, there is a large effect of time zone.
There's always at least one 'noobs only' game going, although there are also four passworded games for every noob game.
