Will we be able to purchase Demigod through Steam?

Going out aon a limb here, as I don't know of the "official" word, but I would have to say NO!  They have impulse, there answer to digital distribution and it make no sense fo them to weaken their DD platform by making this available on all forms.  It will be available at retail and on impulse though.

I think the biggest reason against this game appearing on steam is the fact that you have to have steam running no matter where you bought the game.  I'm pretty sure SD is trying to stay away from that model.

why would you want it on steam? You don't even need to open impulse to run it, wheras you'd have to open steam to run it if you went through steam. You really want to add more stuff to have running on your computer that you don't need?

despairzor, im curious, what benefit do you get for having it with steam?

actually steam got some realy good points. the greatest is that it was the first (maybe there were others before, unsuccessfully, idk) kind of these system, and i  like what came up with that idea: IMPULSE!!!!

yeah, but would that work while using the impulse reactor? and even so, then you wouldn't be in the demigod irc chat, that could be annoying having two different groups (steam and SD) that couldn't communiacte with each other. Or am I totally off base here?

See, people do that a lot. How does being the first make you better? Directly? Indirectly, they've had the time to get better, but that's all just potential. How does being the first one make Steam better then Impulse? Also, indirectly/potentially, Impulse could have learned from Steam's mistakes.

u missunderstood me... i said they were the inventor of this kind of software. and they made the way in some kind for impulse as well maybe. thats the greatest, what steam ever made. impulse is far away from beeing compareable to steam.

its not an equal, after all its something what is a lot better, user friendlier and ... its just cool. who needs steam? i dont. (actually i do because i like playing team fortress II but if i could do so over impulse, i would do!!!)

I agree it would be problematic and I don't htink it should be sold over steam.  But when asked what steam has that impulse doesn't, this is the biggest and first thing that comes to mind.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but Totalgaming.net and Stardock Central was a digital distributor way before Steam was.  To my knowledge all Steam did was take the digital distribution and the lobby system and combine them first.

(Yes, I use Steam for Valve things and Audiosurf, but I FAR prefer Impulse.)

But anyway, to answer the topic, no Stardock games are available on Steam, so I can with some sense of safety make the claim that Demigod will not be on Steam.

Yup, SDC predates Steam, and that was actually the second digital distro program we'd had (See zubaz's comment above).

Impulse isn't really all that new--it's first and foremost a replacement for SDC since it had gotten too old and difficult to use on the backend (it couldn't handle files over 2GB and had to be rewritten to accommodate new releases). The only really new thing going on (big-picture-wise) is that we're working harder now with Impulse to get third party software up for sale than we used to.

Steam was the first to come up with selling third-party content.  But Stardock predates Steam at doing digital distribution by some years. It's just that we didn't get into the business of reselling third party content.  

And to be honest, one of the things that motivated us to start selling third party content was posts like these.  As much as we like Valve (and Steam) we weren't keen on handing over 30% of our revenue to Valve when we had already spent the money and time over the years on our own digital distribution.

To the people that say you have to have steam running to play your games, You are completly wrong. I use Offline mode almost all the time.

Most third party games can be started without starting steam.

Steam has the best backup feature for games.

1 other good thing about steam is that you can take your hdd that steam is installed on and put it into any other computer and launch steam with out having to actually install on that computer.

 

The only reason I would like to get demigod on steam would be to add to my growing library of 108 games.

There are people who only shop at Walmart. But I wouldn't want Walmart to be my only option on all my goods.

I haven't used steam as much as usual this past year, but I used to use it all the time for valve games and I've only ever had problems with Online mode. It always asked me to go online to sign into my account so that I could go offline. What's the point of offline mode if you have to go online first? And even in offline mode... steam is still running, is it not?

The first digital distributor was most likely some porn site. Why does that matter?

If I write a history book than I want to know who was first to [something]. But if I buy a product I'm only interested in the price/performance ratio.

you don't have to login first. If you have no internet it will give you the option to go into offline mode. I start everyone of my games from the steam. I have the impule games in my steam as well. Much better app then the impulse app.
