Freeze during save game

I'm trying to save a game in the late stages of galactic domination. The altarians just begged me for peace and when I tried to save after the end of that turn, the game froze in "Saving Game" screen. I tried to reboot and redo this a couple times but the same thing happened.

When I ctrl-alt-del and jump back to windows there is an "Out of memory" error pop-up on the screen. I find that hard to believe since I'm running with 2gigs of RAM.

Here is are the last few lines of the debug, after the save is started. This save was when I tried it with the quick save feature. The same happens when I use the regular save. I haven't played enough turns to see if autosave will trigger it. I'm assuming that it will.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated. This isn't a crippling error,... yet. I had all but won the game in question. I just don't want it reoccuring in new games.

Well, to try to save it now, see if turning off all the textures and stuff reduced the memory enough to save it. 

For your next game, try clearing out your ships directory from My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships and My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships.

I'm looking into the problem.

Experiencing same thing (v1.2). Gigantic map 768mb ram. Biggest pain is that save game file is deleted.

I think the map was huge, not gigantic but I haven't looked at it in a day or two so I can't remember. FYI, this was a save game already in existance when I patched to v1.3B, not a new game. I haven't started a new game since the patch so I don't know if it will be reproducable with a fresh game.


My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships was already empty

My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships deleted 540 items




Haven't touched the textures. I'll see if that does it.

Deleted ships first and deleted all old save games. Tried saving over an old game, no go. Tried quick saving, no go. Tried creating a new save, no go. Here's the debug:

I'm getting identical behavior on a save game in the later stages of a large map. I posted on it in the latest 1.3 announce posting off the home page. This is new with 1.3, I believe. I have 1.5GB of RAM and the galciv2.exe process is using 1GB in the Windows task manager.

Don't know if it's important but the last good save before this happened is date 22 Feb 2239.

Same problem here. Gigantic map, 2GB of memory, the 1.3 beta. Never had the problem before. My save games actually disappeared after the error (the auto-save first, then when I reloaded from my personal save and tried to save back to it again after completing some turns, it gave me the out of memory bug again and wiped out that save as well)

All my progress and time wasted.

Same problem here. Game locks on save. No errors. Version 1.2. Only happens toward end of game, gigantic universe, loss of game save file. Seems to happen only on quicksave (Ctrl-S). I always clear out all my ship files before every game.

There is a bug in 1.3 beta 1 which causes the game to use to ask for too much memory when the game is loading, and then this additional memory is saved into the save game, so the more it is saved and reloaded, the bigger the file gets, until Windows refuses to give any more memory.

I have fixed it here and the fix will be in the next update.

Good troubleshooting there, Cari (I do it for a living too). Is there a workaround for people currently struggling with the issue or are those individual games "lost" for all intents and purposes?

so waht do we do is 1.3 totally bugged How do I play now? Or is it just those saved games.What give how do i get back to 1.2 so i can at least play.
