Suggestion: Upgrading ships

One of the things I really wish I could do in this game is use the designs of the standard ships to create new ones. Unfortunately, while upgrading custom made ships strips them of all the useful parts leaving only the hull and extras, upgrading a core ship strips all the extras off too. Would it be possible to modify the shipyard to leave the extras on when upgrading core ships?

Also, I would rather have an option for the stripping of useful parts not to happen since if I'm just upgrading the sensors on a ship I don't like having to add everything else all over again. Would this be possible?

These feature has been included in patch 1.1
You can change that in the options menu

I wish there was an ability that would let me upgrade a certain 'type' of component. Say I've got 5 beam weapons on a ship, and I want them upgraded to the next level.

Right now, I have to right-click-remove each of them independantly, and then go back and add five new modules.

Raywind's idea could be expanded to be simply: updgrade all components on this ship to their current, highest-tech equivalents.

Hence, my hyperdrive I's would be replaced by IIs, and my Phasor 2's with Phasor 3s, etc. This would put me in the edit mode for the ship, and wouldn't allow me to hit "save" until I had the space back down within limits (it may already be, but sometimes upgrading all components would cause the space used to exceed the current hull limits). Opening into edit mode would also give me the opportunity to swap out a single component or add one, given the new space or cost requirements....

Anyway, nice idea...

Why can't you just edit a version? The having to replace the whole damn ship thing is a bit retarded and unrealistic.


The came still rocks.

That would be nice. But it might run into problems when you get to the components that have greater power, but a slightly larger size (e.g. the top Laser -> first Plasma)

I just wish when you highlighted the item, it would show you what it was... some things look quite similar, especially sensors look like armor, and some engines look alike.

It's great to be able to see them all lined up at the top of the screen, but why can't you see WHAT it is when you mouse over it??

i agree with the last statement it would be nice to be able to see name of component that way you don't replace a warp engine with a warp engine
