I can't remember/find which ones (or which version of which ones) may not play nice with 64 bit. Several of the proggies from Stardock (DesktopX, Object Bar, Object Dock) plus other 3rd party apps will hide the desktop icons...you have any of those running?

what are you trying to create a shortcut in? Odock,obar,dtx,etc? you can use desktopX to hide the icons or on XP (home at least) - right click - arrange icons by - uncheck show icons - I use that, then create my own object to open the desktop folder when needed - there is also something called ' the hardest button to skin' but I can't remember if this is what it was for.
