After the automatic update my Desktop also was empty and "Enable Fences" via context menu didn't work. Restoring Fences form a previous date didn't work either. So i downloaded the installation file manually and startet the installation process *as administator* (without deinstalling the previous version) After installation finished and the requested reboot succeeded I GOT MY FENCES BACK on screen. This solved the issue for me.
