I agree with mikeswi. I've experienced many close games where defences can make difference in the arms race, mainly because the research costs are much lower. If a single form of attack is causing you problems you can overload on the defence against that one attack type and win consistantly. You just out-tech them to a point where their weapons are useless even if they have more rps to spend. The problem comes with multiple opponents with multiple types of attack, in w

Martimus They can sure be tense as you try to balance rushing to planetary invasion with all the other things you need to make you competative in the longer term. If it is a minor you end up cheesily trading everything they own for everything you own just before you invade. If it is a major it is similar but you may

I guess I just never see the trade being worthwhile. Speaking of the AI giving you the whole fleet, it does do some silly things in trading. In 1.0x I've seen it trade it's early transports (don't know whether it has been tweaked now), this is so funny cos you get them to invade the world they have just left.

No118 You may be right, in which case my bad. However I still prefer my tactic as a general rule. The AI seems to have no idea that gifts may be bad for you, guess it has never read the story of the Trojan wars...<img src="http://images.stardock.com/sd_com/smiles/BigSmile.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absm

I love the fact that the pre-game settings affect which strategies work. In fact everything you learn from tiny maps (rush and declare war asap) is sort of reversed on gigantic ones (build solid sustainable infrastructure). I wondered what everyone's favour combination is any why. Personally I'm on Masochistic, Large, Normal Stars, Planets, Habitables, Anomilies etc. I try to play the each race in turn with default attributes (but I tend t

Let's all laugh at a strategy guide from someone who can't beat the game on 'Tough'.

I tend to use cargo hulls for multiple purposes in the very early game. a)Research sensors very early then stick 10 of them on a cargo ship and you never need to add sensors to your normal ships again. b)Stick any weapon and loads of engines and you can zoom around and kill any undefended target (most things in the early game). c)Stick on loads of weapons and you've got a reuasble fire barge of sorts... Great for pre-emptive st
