Transparency question

What file types support transparency for Desktop X? I've tried PNG and I just get a garbled mess. I took the image that I wanted and converted it to index in Photoshop Elements. I made the part transparent and saved it as a PNG, but when I open it for DX3, its all garbled colors. Please help.

bmp (with magic pink) & png work.

I don't use P.E. so I don't understand the conversion to 'index'.

I've used paint for bmp & PSP8 for png. In PSP8 I initially save as png, go into options and run optimizer, there under transparency i choose alpha channel.

In your color wheel, you'll notice it breaks it down to RGB somewhere in the window - pick the darkest pink - it should be at 255-0-255, it not you can change it.

From what I've read here previously, Photoshop has an optimizer for pngs, then under transparency pick alpha transparency

Are you talking about simple transparancy where only one colour of fully transparent or alphatransparency?

It might be related to the way you save the png, perhaps the compression or encoding setting.
