And why do I have to make an extra click to see the preview images of the backups?
This was a User Interface decision, meant to declutter the experience for all users. The answer to that question, along with any feedback on such changes can be found and directed to the proper feedback thread where that change was made. It is not related to your reported issue here.
You write that the bug is reproducible. Why isn't it finally fixed? It can't be that difficult. reported the error for the first time 4 months ago.

I wrote that the issue was reproducible. While it may seem semantic to debate the difference between an "issue" and a "bug," suffice to say not all reported issues are technically best thought of as bugs in the software. I apologize if this has not been clear through this process.
To clarify further: In other words, just because your experience here is inconvenient- this does not necessarily mean the issue, while verifiably related in a way to this software, can easily be treated as a "bug" for the developer to easily slate to be quashed. On the contrary, many issues reported by users of the software are discovered to be integrally related to the native Windows environment itself. In these cases, there are no immediate guarantees or schedule for fixes that can be offered by our team.
In my role to support you, the user, I would be remiss not to make what I've said here clear. While a developer may grace us with more details and investigation to try and pinpoint the nature of such problems as they arise, and while I may support you through troubleshooting around negative experiences related to the software- there is quite simply only so much we can do. We will endeavor to continue doing our best.
One final note I'll add, is that for this case, one thing we are able to offer you currently is the recent fix to the Ctrl + Mousewheel functionality for resizing icons. (And your feedback was quite helpful on that, as it came up in our troubleshooting, so thank you for that.) Now that this functionality works, I advise that you try using it to find a comfortable size for your icons that will work for you now, and that you bear with us through the continued development of the software.
