Redirect to %user/username/onedrive/desktop% folder

computer migrated my user/desktop holder to user/onedrive/desktop but Stardock Fences is not realizing it

Unsure if this is a support tickt or a post in a user forum that is moderated by stardock admins.
Im using fences 3 since 3/30/2017 purchase (Order number: 4026638)  recently the desktop folders and Icons had to be moved to ONEDRIVE . this caused calamity, as now all the fences I had items in  became empty, and I have 2 piles of files and folders (over 270 shortcuts, files and folders in total)  on my desktop and the 6 fences tabs I created for organization of items that are almost empty. I'm unsure how to edit the registry or if there is a setting in Fences to change for the location  that fences pulls my files and folders from . should be simple, but it should have been setup to not go to a static location but to a dynamic user/desktop location, I would think. I tried calling for support, but was directed here.

Please advise.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Fenced icons have absolute paths - syncing the desktop to OneDrive has your desktop icons at a different location, thus breaking it.  

You have two options:

-Stop syncing the desktop, move all your icons back to the actual local desktop folder, restore a Fences snapshot.

-Keep it as is and replace your icons in the Fences they were in.

Im thinking that the performance now seems slower a bit (sluggish to multitask) . I manually dragged all icons from the desktop folder on onedrive to the desired fence already.

 

What if I had uninstalled fences and reinstalled fences  (in the displayed desktop-which is pulling form local Onedrive folder) and then moved the icons to desired fence tabs, would that have improved the performance some?

I can't tell from this if you mean you stopped syncing the desktop or if they are indeed still on OneDrive and you just re-fenced them.

If performance is suffering after the icons are not remotely stored, my first recommendation (to stop syncing and move them back locally) would be the one to consider.

C:\Users\<myname>\OneDrive\Desktop folder (on this laptop) houses all that was originally in the C:\Users\t<my name>\Desktop folder
It's local on the laptop.  Some days I have to use Virtual Desktop Interface (Citrix Workspace/Netscaler) during Covid19 to telework with this laptop nowadays. Having the desktop in this folder allows me to directly access the stuff, if I need it, from my laptop's desktop while working with the software needed to do my work inside the virtual machine.

Only difference being the files/docs/shortcuts are no longer on the C:\Users\t<my name>\Desktop folder

I would not think that would cause performance issues. 

Im sure there are features Im not using or aware of in this software, but when I used robocopy to safely move desktop to onedrive folder, I was thinking there may be a way to just have changed the desktop "reference location" in fences, to the new location, while keeping all other settings the same.

No worries. its working now.

OD synching of desktop is currently disabled. Not unlinked but not running. But after I reinstalled fresh windows, OD synching with desktop saving to cloud was enabled. That's where the current ones came from. 

Are you saying that if i look at the properties of the current ones, that they'll reference OD? or that they just wont work for fences for another reason. Their properties look normal. and icons look good.

if i were always previously synching my desktop to cloud, and those did work fine with fences, but now won't. Sounds like there's fixe other to document what the desktop was, start fences, create new shortcuts.
