Another issue with Start10 and Windows 2004

This forum has a number of posts showing how the update to Windows 10 v2004 has broken Start10.

I have identified another issue.

When you select any of the Administrative Tools from the Start 10 menu it causes Explorer.exe to crash.

If you select any of the Administrative Tools that rely on MMC via the Windows menu the MMC crashes.

Neither of these things happens once Start10 is uninstalled.

Given that other users have identified other problems with Start 10 and Windows v2004 it would appear that Start10 has too many problems under this new version.

I have uninstalled but look forward to hearing that all these issues have been fixed.

I believe the only other reported issue is search not including control panel results which we have an internal fix for.

With regards to your issue, how are you launching the entries, is it from search, from all programs list or via some other route?

I will see if I can reproduce on a machine later as it would be unexpected for it to crash.

Likewise I just checked in a later insider without issues.

Is it possible the act of uninstalling Start10 forced you to reboot which fixed an unrelated issue?

If so reinstalling Start10 would not cause the issue to reappear. A crash of mmc itself would be extremely unexpected due to how Start10 works which points to an OS level glitch possibly.

I have Administrative Tools as a Menu on Start 10. I have Start 10 as the menu of choice upon clicking on the Windows start icon. I click on that icon, select Administrative Tools and then Explorer.exe crashes.

If I use the Windows menu instead of Start 10, Explorer.exe does not crash upon selecting Administrative tools.

I uninstalled Start 10 and installed the "Iobit" competitor Start 8 and set it up in the same way. Upon choosing Administrative tools from the menu on Start 8 there is no crash.

The crash is specific to Start 10 and the selection of Administrative Tools from a menu.

I have run the Windows tools SFC and DISM which both report no errors.

On Windows forums, people are reporting similar errors with MMC and various programs

If you are able to provide any links to these windows forums it would be really helpful as I am curious if the reports are from people using Start10 or in fact they are experiencing an OS bug.

Did you try reinstalling Start10 after you uninstalled it as it still sounds like this is one of those glitches that Windows 2004 is known for.

With regards to other forum posts, the one about a missing send to desktop is highly unlikely to be Start10 either as the menu is a standard context menu on a file. What shows is up to the OS and shell extensions. When new OS updates come out we get the blame for any OS changes even if we have nothing to do with it (taskbar changes are a particular one we get the blame for despite not being part of our product).

The only other 2004 related report is a blur issue on a mixed dpi setup. This isn't related to 2004 directly and can happen when dpis switch in rare circumstances and we have a modification for this coming in the update too. Basically the OS blur code doesn't handle this correctly and ends up painting outside of the bounds as it scales incorrectly.

I also tried something I haven't tried before. I had the universal apps set to a menu rather than a link. Selecting that menu also leads to the explorer.exe crash

I am not trying to blame Start10 by the way. I fully appreciate the issue is probably located in the Windows v2004 update. (It has several problems apparently - one of which is going backwards to a previous version doesn't seem to work..!)

Looking at some discussions there does appear to be a common theme emerging relating to graphics drivers. I have Intel UHD 630, by the way, if that helps.

I have a sneaking suspicion these problems might all go away when Windows patches v2004 which I understand is on its way..!

Yes, precisely. The explorer crash happens when selecting any Start 10 item set as a menu - except the Control Panel, except that becomes very slow to load
