Problem Restoring Fences

One of our users is having a problem with the Fences software.

I have recently upgraded Windows 10 on his machine from Version 1809 to Version 1903.

The original snapshot taken in 1809 will not restore in the newer version of windows (1903). All that happens when he tries to restore the snapshot is that the fences docks moves into the correct position on screen temporarily (1 or 2 seconds) and then moves back.

Is there currently a known issue when trying to restore snapshots across different versions of Windows 10?

Best regards,
Reece

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try the purge and reinstall steps : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

And you can backup your snapshot before the purge by using this steps : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#backupsnapshots

Just make sure to re-download the latest version again from your account. Reinstall that version. Reboot and retest.

Report back here.

Thanks

I'm having a similar problem with Fences 4.0.0.3, but my problem relates to a multiple screen configuration.

I have a KVM for my primary screen and use a USB -> HDMI x 4 attachment for my other three screens.  When I switch via KVM to another computer and return, naturally Fences has adjusted the four-screen display to the single display.  My problem is that using Configure Fences to restore the screen icons with a layout snapshot, I get no change in my layout.  It's like Restore Snapshot is not working at all.  The snapshot clearly shows the saved screens and icon/fences positions, but no movement occurs.

Suggestions?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Don't have system with 4 to test your setup. But, have you try out this different setting in the "Layout features & snapshots" tab?

Basj;

I've been using that setting since the beginning.  FYI, I also have the Snapping/spacing item selected as well as Layout snapshots.

Is there a way to "dump" the snapshot file and see how the data is stored?  The picture shows exactly what it was and what I want it to be after the restoration, but that is not what I get after restoring.  All fences remain on my primary screen.

Fences snapshots are human-readable XML:
